Georgia’s big man, Asa Newell, is projected to be a first-round selection in the 2025 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 15.4 points on solid 54.3% shooting from the field during his freshman season and is regarded as a lob threat and paint protector. He helped Georgia make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2015, as the Bulldogs finished 20-13.
Newell isn’t the only athlete in his family. While neither of his parents played basketball professionally, both of his siblings are accomplished players. Let’s get to know them in detail.

Meet Asa Newell’s Siblings, Jaden and Zoë
Newell was born to Justin and Carmen Mitchell-Newell on October 5, 2005. He is the middle child of his parents, with his sister Zoë being the youngest and his brother Jaden being the oldest. Both his sister and brother play basketball.

Newell and his brother Jaden attended an on-campus preschool across the street from the Stegeman Coliseum, where their father believes “the first seed” of basketball was planted in them. Both Newell brothers eventually played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and while the younger Newell is now an NBA hopeful, Jaden is entering his third year of college basketball.
Jaden has seen limited playing time during his college career, appearing in a handful of games over his first two seasons. However, after walking on to the team, he was awarded a scholarship for the 2024-25 season. Despite the limited court time, he still dreams of playing professional basketball.
“I’ve always been a visionary,” he said. “When I was younger, I wanted to play professional soccer. Now, I want to play professional basketball. Having big goals inspires me to work hard.”
Whether Jaden’s dream comes true or not, he will always have a special place in Newell’s heart.
“He’s really a cheerleader in my life. I really appreciate him for that,” he said of Jaden. “He paved the way for me in this basketball journey. He took the hard hits first going to play for the middle school team and playing for Choctaw High School. He was the one who just created that path, you know, like a bike path. He was the first one taking all the hits, making the calls for me to help me be a better person.
“I have a special place in my heart for my brother ’cause seeing him so strong and being able to take the first punch for me throughout life and always being there for me helped motivate me every single day.”
Meanwhile, Newell revealed that his sister wasn’t always a dedicated basketball player. Zoë was initially involved in multiple sports, including swimming and volleyball, before fully committing to basketball.
“My sister Zoe, she’s a hooper now,” Newell revealed. “She likes all types of things and she just recently switched over to basketball completely. She was a volleyball player and swimmer as well. She completely switched. I know my dad has been working with her every single day, so just seeing her doing something we all enjoy is just really nice to see.”
Zoë is an eighth-grade student who recently signed with Essence Girls Basketball. She hopes to earn a college scholarship, and according to their father, the trio is very close. “I can hear the boys give her advice. They just kind of talk to each other about what’s going on in their lives and pick up where they left off. They have a really close relationship.”
The 2025 NBA Draft will take place June 25-26 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, where Asa Newell hopes to hear his name called. He was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team after his impressive debut season and is expected to be selected in the first round of the draft.
