Brea was first introduced to basketball at a young age by his father, Stephen, who played professionally in the Dominican Republic. His father has been by his son’s side every step of the way throughout his career, speaking to the media on multiple occasions.

Stephen also potentially permanently altered the trajectory of his son’s career, with the Kentucky Guard being named as a homage to the late Kobe Bryant, only changing the final ‘e’ with a ‘y to give it a little more personality.

“My dad is a big fan of Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. Kobe was the best for him, and when he had me, he wanted to give me that name and changed the last letter so that I would be different. I am proud to have this name.” Koby explained in an interview with Marca.

Despite being named after one of the greatest NBA players of all time, growing up in New York, Brea looked up to a different NBA legend, in Golden State Warriors icon Steph Curry, admitting that he spent hours studying his infamous shooting.

“I was young and didn’t have the strength to shoot above my head. I would watch Steph pull it from his hip,” Brea explained, although he quickly moved on to study other players when he realised that wasn’t working for him.

“But as you progress, going to different levels of the game, you see that it doesn’t work for you. So, I began to study Ray Allen, Klay Thompson, JJ Redick, and Kyle Korver.”

While not much is known about Brea’s mother, Mayra Villar, aside from her Dominican Republican heritage, similarly to his father, she also gave him a name that he kept throughout his career, his nickname, “Fuego,” which she gave to him in High School.

Going into the 2025 NBA Draft, Brea carries both of his parents with him by both of his names, as he looks to follow in the footsteps of Karl-Anthony Towns Jr, who also went to Kentucky, to join the ranks of players of Dominican descent to play in the NBA.
