LeBron James is known for his mental toughness throughout his illustrious 22-year NBA career. However, he recently offered rare insight into the stress and unique experience of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 NBA Championship run inside the Orlando, Florida bubble.

LeBron James Believes 2020 NBA Title Run Was One of the Toughest
Nearly five years after capturing his fourth NBA title, James opened up about the unprecedented challenges of the 2020 postseason, which took place amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
On the latest episode of the “Mind the Game” podcast, James described the setup in the bubble as “mental warfare,” noting how the Lakers and Miami Heat—who faced off in the Finals—were constantly running into each other in shared spaces such as hotels, buses, and dining areas.
“Every morning you have to get tested. You might bump into them in the courtyard when you’re eating. That’s like some mental warfare. There’s no escape,” James said.
He went on to further describe the experience: “Okay, I’ve battled this guy. He’s pushed me. He’s cursed me out. There’s a physical game, and then when it’s time for me to finally relax and go back and have a glass of wine, I’m bumping into this guy in the elevator. … I gotta ride up 40 floors to get up to my room. It’s another set of mental warfare.”
James wrapped up his thoughts with: “That was a very challenging, difficult thing because you just don’t want to be around the competition until I get on the floor. You want to save it for when it counts.”
If anyone understands how different each NBA Finals experience can be, it’s James — who has made nine Finals appearances, including an incredible run of eight straight, before facing the Miami Heat in 2020.
Athletes are creatures of habit, and having that routine completely disrupted — losing a sense of normalcy while also navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial and social justice movements — made the Lakers’ championship that year especially significant.
This echoes a sentiment James has expressed before. During an appearance on the “Road Trippin'” podcast with his former teammate Richard Jefferson, he stated:
“The one thing that I know for sure, is that I’ve been a part of 2 teams that’s won the two hardest championships in NBA history. 2016 Cavs coming back from down 3-1 against the Golden State Warriors and then what we went through in the Bubble.”

There’s no question that the 3–1 turnaround in the 2016 Finals ranks as one of James’ most incredible career feats—and one of the most iconic comebacks in NBA history.
While fans of other players and teams often clown the 2020 bubble—mockingly referring to it as the “Mickey Mouse ring”—James and others who actually played in it have detailed how difficult it truly was, with James calling it “the purest form of basketball.”
