The Dallas Mavericks are on the lookout for a new point guard. With seasoned floor general Kyrie Irving set to miss a good chunk of the 2025-26 NBA season as he recovers from his gruesome ACL injury, the Mavs are looking for a temporary but effective replacement.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, there are three veteran names Dallas has been linked with. Lonzo Ball, Jrue Holiday, and Chris Paul are tipped with a potential move to the Mavs.

NBA Insider Names Three Veteran Guards As Potential Dallas Mavericks Targets
In his latest, Stein wrote that the Mavericks are expected to “at least explore whether there are any feasible trade pathways” to Holiday. He did call the deal a complicated one to figure out after the guard’s hefty contract with the Boston Celtics.
“League sources say Dallas is expected to at least explore whether there are any feasible trade pathways to Boston’s Jrue Holiday — complicated as that would likely be given the three years and $104 million still left on Holiday’s contract — while also maintaining an interest in a far more reasonable trade target as we’ve discussed on the DLLS Mavs podcast: Lonzo Ball…”
“Another name to monitor for Dallas: Chris Paul,” Stein noted. “The free agent-to-be just turned 40 on May 6, but Paul also just played (and started) 82 games in his maiden season as a San Antonio Spur.”

Ball is under contract with the Chicago Bulls for two more seasons at $20M. Coming off a lengthy injury hiatus, the playmaker averaged 7.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 35 games for the Bulls this season. Paul, 40, will be a free agent this summer and comes off an Iron Man season with the San Antonio Spurs with 82 appearances. He showed he could still make an impact, averaging 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds.
In related news, CBS Sports‘ Robby Kalland named Phoenix Suns’ guard Tyus Jones as one of the options for the Mavericks. “It wasn’t a great year for Jones in Phoenix, but that was also a situation I’m not sure anyone could truly thrive in,” Kalland opined, while also adding why a change of teams would see him fare better.
“He averaged 10.2 points and 5.3 assists per game on a Suns team with horrific vibes and might be happy to take a change of scenery. Dallas would give him a chance to start again and perhaps prove himself in a position better suited to his success.”
Jones has plied his trade for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Washington Wizards. While nothing has been concrete about a potential move from Phoenix, there’s also every possibility that the Mavericks are keeping an eye out for players who fit the mold perfectly in Irving’s absence.
