NBA Draft Prospect Tre Johnson Draws Comparison to 23.9-PPG All-Star Thanks to ‘Shot-Creation and Shotmaking’

NBA Draft prospect Tre Johnson is drawing comparisons to this Heat All-Star because of his impressive shot-creation and shotmaking.

A consensus five-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the 2025 NBA Draft, Tre Johnson is expected to be a franchise cornerstone for whichever team selects him. As a freshman, he led Texas in minutes (34.7) and points (19.9) per game. He also shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range, many of those shots coming off the dribble, giving him a strong case as the best shooter in this class.

That offensive upside has led to comparisons with 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro.

Tre Johnson Gets Compared to Tyler Herro

Herro was drafted 13th overall by the Miami Heat in 2019. He’s played more than 50 games in every season except one and has averaged more than 20 points per game over the past four seasons.

Johnson is coming off an All-SEC season in 2024, where he averaged 23.9 points, 5.5 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game. Getting compared to Herro is high praise, and that comparison came from Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman.

“Scouts believe Tre Johnson will remain in the top-five mix with eye-test approval on the self-creation and shotmaking that fueled his 19.9 points per game,” Wasserman wrote. “…Those scouts who aren’t as confident in Johnson’s upside question his ability to blow by or create for others. But there seems to be enough certainty tied to his perimeter scoring and competitiveness that there won’t be much nitpicking in the No. 5-8 range.”

Johnson is a gritty, shifty guard who makes tough shots and can also facilitate, much like Herro. While Wasserman predicted him to go No. 5 to the Utah Jazz, Brandon Austin of PFSN had him landing with the Brooklyn Nets at No. 8 overall.

“The Brooklyn Nets are in a transitional phase, seeking foundational pieces with long-term upside, and Tre Johnson fits the mold perfectly,” Austin wrote. “While his freshman season at Texas highlighted some ball-dominant tendencies, the NBA environment could actually bring out the best in his game.

“Johnson thrives as a movement shooter, capable of operating off the ball and punishing defenses with his deep shooting range and high release.

“Johnson can hit tough shots from anywhere on the floor. He led the SEC in scoring as a freshman with nearly 20 points per game, showcasing his elite shot-making ability at all three levels.

“For the Nets, Johnson offers another high-upside scoring weapon who can stretch the floor immediately and grow into a more complete offensive threat over time. He may not yet be a polished two-way star, but his offensive skill set is NBA-ready.”

There are still some concerns about Johnson’s shot selection. But for a team lacking consistent guard play, adding an offensive cornerstone like Johnson feels like a no-brainer.
