After leading Boston to a must-win Game 5 victory over the Knicks, Brown spoke from the heart. First, he praised the team effort. “It was fantastic. We had a lot of fun tonight. We came out playing team basketball. We got contribution from everybody,” Brown said.
Then, he made it personal.

It was short, just seven words. But it said everything about the connection between Brown and Tatum, and how much this team still believes in him.
Tatum, sidelined with a ruptured Achilles tendon, wasn’t on the floor Wednesday (May 14) night. But his presence was still felt. He leads the Celtics with 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists. Losing a player like him at such a crucial juncture was a gut punch, and any team would’ve folded. But the Celtics came out firing.
Derrick White poured in 34 points, knocking down seven 3-pointers. Brown added 26 points and 12 assists. The Celtics hit 22 3s as a team and picked up their first home win of the series without Tatum.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla kept the team grounded before tip-off, telling his players to give everything for one game. No one knew what would come after that, but the focus was clear. Win tonight, or go home. The Celtics responded with a team effort, and now, they live to fight another day.
Tatum’s Mystery Message Fueled Celtics’ Victory?
Before Game 5, Tatum made sure his teammates heard from him, even if he couldn’t join them on the court.
According to The New York Post, Tatum shared a message with the team ahead of the must-win game. The exact words remain unknown, and head coach Mazzulla wouldn’t reveal what was said. But it clearly struck a chord.
When asked about the message, Mazzulla played it close. Still, the Celtics came out energized, connected, and determined.
Boston closed the third quarter on a 23-9 run and took a 91-76 lead into the fourth. They never looked back. The Celtics pushed the lead as high as 28, showing a level of control and urgency that had been missing earlier in the series.
Their effort wasn’t just physical, it was emotional too. The game got heated at times, including a brief face-off between Josh Hart and Brown. But the Celtics channeled that energy into execution. They nailed 12 3s in the first half alone and came out as winners at the buzzer.

Game 5 was about survival. But with Brown leading the charge and Tatum still present in spirit, it might also be the start of something bigger, maybe a championship.
