NBA Insider Reveals Heartbreaking Details Of Jayson Tatum’s Emotional Conversation With Dad After Achilles Tear

An ESPN insider shared the details of Jayson Tatum's conversation with his father after rupturing his Achilles tendon in Game 4 against the Knicks.

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum suffered what could be a career-altering Achilles tear in Game 4 of the Celtics’ series against the New York Knicks. Tatum was understandably emotional after going out for the rest of the season and possibly part of next season.

Among the people he first talked to after the injury was his father, Justin. ESPN’s Marc J. Spears revealed the emotional interaction between the two after Tatum tore up his Achilles.

The Emotional Conversation Between Jayson Tatum & His Dad

Spears spoke with Justin, who shared what their conversation was like after Tatum got hurt. Spears said it was a powerful moment for both.

“Jayson ended up giving him a call himself once he was able to,” Spears said on NBA Today. “They cried on the phone together, and Jayson was asking him, ‘Why me, Dad? Why me? Why does this have to happen to me? And (Justin) said, ‘Son, this is God’s will. You’re young. You’re going to get through this,’ he reminded him, ‘Isn’t Kobe your idol? Kobe got through this.”

Tatum has admitted that Kobe Bryant was his most significant influence as a basketball player growing up. Bryant tore his Achilles in 2013 and still managed to play in the NBA for two additional seasons, though he did not play at the same level he once did.

Bryant sustained the injury when he was 34, while Tatum suffered a torn Achilles at 27. Whether Tatum’s age will help him return to full strength remains to be seen.

Tatum’s emotions make plenty of sense. He is one of the NBA’s best players and was playing the best basketball of his career. To have his prime cut short in a matter of moments would make anyone cry. However, Tatum has exceeded expectations from the start and will make it his mission to return to the player he was following such a devastating injury.

It’s no surprise that he called his dad first. Beyond being his parent, Justin played a major role in shaping Tatum into the player he is today. With the proper support and inspiration, especially following in Kobe’s footsteps, Tatum has what he needs to make a comeback.

Even if the Celtics won’t get him back for a year and a half, they will gladly take their star back at 100% more than anything else, given his success with the franchise.
