Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Denver Nuggets Series Recap
This series has had its share of back-and-forth moments, which isn’t surprising when you have the presumed top-two MVP finishers going at it every other night. Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have lived up to the hype, proving they’re two of the most difficult covers in the league.
- Game 1 at OKC: Nuggets 121, Thunder 119 (OKC -10.5, O/U 229.5)
- Game 2 at OKC: Thunder 149, Nuggets 106 (OKC -10.5, O/U 230)
- Game 3 at DEN: Nuggets 113, Thunder 104, OT (OKC -6, O/U 232)
- Game 4 at DEN: Thunder 92, Nuggets 87 (OKC -6.5, O/U 228)
- Game 5 at OKC: Thunder 112, Nuggets 105 (OKC -10, O/U 221.5)
- Game 6 (tonight) at DEN
- Game 7 (if necessary): Sunday at OKC
Aaron Gordon’s impact has been as important as any non-MVP player in this series. His stats against OKC — 16.4 points, 9.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists per game — don’t quite show his knack for clutch plays. He hit the game-winner with 2.8 seconds left in Game 1 and nailed a game-tying 3 with 27.1 seconds left in regulation during Game 3, giving the Nuggets a shot in overtime.
When Denver has needed a play, Gordon has delivered, and they’ll need more of that versatility to keep this series alive.
Game 5 went the way of the home team, despite Jokić and Jamal Murray combining for 72 points. Oklahoma City managed to flip an eight-point deficit into a seven-point win, thanks to its starting group hunting smart shots and capitalizing on them.

SGA led the Thunder with 31 points (12-for-23 shooting), but it was Chet Holmgren who made the biggest impact compared to expectations (14 points, 6-for-9), and Oklahoma City was +13 in his 34 minutes (-6 in the 14 minutes he sat).
Thunder vs. Nuggets Prediction
Back to the big question: Can the home team stay alive?
Over the past two games, Denver has increased its zone defense. It’s not a complex scheme, but with their length and anticipation, it’s worked well for them.
Thunder Turnover Rates
- Regular season: 10.3%
- First seven games this postseason: 8.6%
- Games 4–5: 12.8%
Jalen Williams has struggled against that defense, which is surprising for a player shooting 38.2% from 3 in his career. In the last two games, he’s gone just 7-for-27 from the field over 71 minutes — looking as out of rhythm as he has all year.
Even with those issues — a rising turnover rate and their No. 2 scorer in a slump — the Thunder have still won both games. If Denver’s defense isn’t getting results now, what happens if the shooting luck swings back the other way? What if Williams finds his rhythm?
Denver ran out of gas in Game 5, getting outscored 34–19 in the fourth quarter and missing 11 of 12 3-point attempts. That kind of fatigue isn’t likely to go away in just 48 hours, especially with a short rotation that isn’t going to deepen suddenly.
The Thunder are probably going to push the pace even more. If this goes to Game 7, Denver gets an extra day off — something Oklahoma City is surely aware of.
Yes, basketball is played on both sides of the court. In theory, Denver could score its way out of trouble, and Jokić is good enough to carry that. But the Thunder’s defense has mostly shut the Nuggets down.
Jokic is elite, but his supporting cast hasn’t kept up. Outside of Jokic and Murray, this team struggles to create offense — and that’s been exposed against OKC.
Assist Rate
- This series: 54.7%
- Round 1: 59.7%
- Regular season: 68.3%
Michael Porter Jr. had a hot Game 3 (7-for-10), but in the rest of the series, he’s 5-for-32 (2-for-21 from 3). He clearly isn’t healthy, and the Thunder’s coaching staff isn’t stressing over him at this point.
Russell Westbrook and Christian Braun are among the few other options who’ve shown anything. But even they are just 11-for-43 on wide-open 3s in this series. That might sound promising, until you ask why they’re so open in the first place.
If you throw out the first half of Game 2 (a total outlier), the per-48 scoring average in this series is:
- Thunder: 106.2
- Nuggets: 103.2
Expect something close to that tonight, maybe even a bit more in OKC’s favor if Denver gets desperate late.
When Denver was eliminated last year, Minnesota added five late points in a scramble. This game could follow a similar script, with Oklahoma City covering the spread and punching their ticket to the next round.
Prediction: Thunder 111, Nuggets 103
Thunder vs. Nuggets Player Props
I split two props in Game 5, but I’ll take it as a win.
Let me explain. I judge props by the process, not just the result. Sports betting is hard. If you’re results-driven only, you’ll be chasing your tail. I had:
Alex Caruso over 13.5 PRA
Luguentz Dort under 8.5 points
The good: Caruso came off the bench fired up. He exceeded his average minutes, was wide open on half of his 3s, and even grabbed an offensive rebound that led to a Holmgren dunk. He finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes. He’s been the most reliable OKC reserve, and that role should continue.

The bad: Dort played 28 minutes. For a two-minute stretch in the fourth, Denver broke down and left him wide open. He scored three points in 26 minutes, hitting just one open 3. But in Denver, he’s shot 2-for-14 from deep this series and hasn’t taken a 2-point shot or free throw in two straight games. The Thunder may look elsewhere.
Caruso isn’t Dort’s backup, but if he plays well with the core starters, his role could grow. Or maybe Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe, or Jaylin Williams get hot instead. The bottom line is that there are plenty of ways for Dort to miss his scoring mark. He can still help the team, but that doesn’t mean his shot total will go up.
