Cleveland Cavaliers fans had their hearts ripped out on Tuesday night, and Donovan Mitchell felt every bit of it.
After a brutal 114-105 loss to the Indiana Pacers at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, the Cavaliers’ playoff dreams came to an end. But Mitchell? He didn’t duck the spotlight. Instead, he delivered a message dripping with fire, issuing a stern warning for his doubters: They’ll be back.
Cleveland Cavaliers’ Season Crashes Out, But Donovan Mitchell Refuses to Crumble
The Cleveland Cavaliers had all the makings of a deep playoff team: top seed, insane regular season record, and momentum that made the rest of the East sweat. But the Indiana Pacers clearly didn’t read the script. They came into Cleveland’s house and ended the party, sealing their 4-1 series upset in Game 5.
Mitchell gave the team everything he had, scoring 35 points, 9 boards, and 4 steals in the final outing. And yet, the Pacers still walked out with the win and the series.
Still, Mitchell didn’t flinch in front of the mic. “We didn’t get it done… especially at home. That’s what hurts, you know?” he admitted postgame.
If Mitchell was bitter, it was with purpose. He knew what was coming next: headlines, hot takes, and relentless criticism. But instead of hiding from it, the Cavs star welcomed it, ready to take on another season.
“Getting beat down like this. And y’all are gonna write some sh*t about us, man, and that’s gonna be fuel,” he said postgame. “Like, fuel for everybody. Y’all gonna say a lot of sh*t. Y’all are, and that’s what it takes. I’ve been here, so I understand. We understand, and now we just got to use it as fuel for next year.”

Despite the regular season triumph, he knew the Cavaliers didn’t live up to the hype. A team that looked like it might run the East couldn’t even make it out of the second round.
“I would go to bat for every guy in that locker room. I’m willing to die out there for those guys,” Mitchell added, loyal to his team in time of crisis. He emphasized how this isn’t a group that’s going to quit, even after a postseason faceplant.

This wasn’t just a player speaking in postgame clichés. Cleveland might be out, but it’s not done.
Though the team might undergo roster changes, the Cavaliers have another shot at the title next year. Following a regroup and hopefully rewarding offseason, the 2025-26 NBA season will begin in October.
