NBA Insider Predicts Spurs May Trade No. 2 Pick Since Dylan Harper Is ‘Square Peg in a Round Hole’ Next to De’Aaron Fox

One NBA analyst believes that the San Antonio Spurs might not draft Dylan Harper but trade away the No. 2 overall pick instead.

The San Antonio Spurs find themselves in a very promising position. The deep vein thrombosis condition for Victor Wembanyama was a legitimate blow to the franchise. However, the condition looks unlikely to be a long-term thing, and now, the Spurs have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

But with the combo of Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox already on the roster, one insider believes San Antonio might choose to go a different route than adding the obvious choice in Dylan Harper. Instead, he believes a trade might be on the market.

In that scenario, though, one prominent name jumps out more than any other.

Could the San Antonio Spurs Trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo?

With Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially on the move this offseason as he entertains a future outside the Milwaukee Bucks for the first time in his career, chief NBA insider Brian Windhorst was quick to name the Spurs as a likely destination.

A pairing of Antetokounmpo and Wembanyama would instantly catapult San Antonio as prime championship favorites. And now, holding the second overall pick, that dream could very realistically become a reality.

The Athletic’s Tony Jones believes adding presumptive No. 2 overall pick Harper might not be in the Spurs’ best interests, especially after the major trade for Fox in the middle of last season.

“Yeah, Harper going there with Fox and Castle is very much a square peg in a round hole. At the end of the day you gotta take the best guy, but I gotta imagine they are gonna answer their phone when it rings.”

The latest mock draft from PFSN, following the fallout of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, still has San Antonio taking Harper at No. 2 overall, claiming, “there’s no sense in the Spurs passing on the clear second-best prospect in this year’s class.”

However, with a 6-foot-6 frame and shooting just 33% from distance at the collegiate level, Harper feels like a facsimile of the player Fox already is. With that in mind, it might be a smarter bet for San Antonio to package him for a win-now player.

If that can turn into Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and former NBA champion who’s still in the peak of his prime, then there might not be a better opportunity for the Spurs. In the post-Gregg Popovich era, the team is going to need some stability.

A Fox-Wembanyama-Antetokounmpo trio offers that in spades, ensuring that San Antonio can be contenders for years to come.

Begs the question how exactly he fits into the picture though. Sure, Wemby needs backup help from another big, but wheres our shooters?
