The Los Angeles Lakers’ season came crashing down as the Minnesota Timberwolves sealed their fate with a 103-96 Game 5 victory, ending L.A.’s playoff run. Emotions were already running high, but it was head coach JJ Redick’s postgame remarks that truly lit the fuse online.
What was meant to be a moment of reflection quickly turned into a lightning rod for criticism, as Lakers fans took issue with Redick’s calm tone and perceived lack of accountability after the team’s first-round exit.
JJ Redick’s Comments After Game 5 Spark Fan Backlash
Following the Lakers’ elimination, Redick addressed the media with a tone that fans quickly labeled as soft and deflective. NBA reporter Mike Trudell posted Redick’s postgame comments on X, where the first-year coach reflected on the season-ending loss:
“There’s always a mix of disappointment and gratitude. Certainly disappointed and not something I ever envisioned with this team, having to go in and talk to them after losing in the first round,” Redick said.
“But give Minnesota a lot of credit. They’re a really good basketball team. I think our guys played hard enough and did all the right things. We tried to make it work with what we had and came up short,” he concluded.
But Redick’s attempt to balance disappointment with perspective didn’t sit well with Lakers fans. Many were furious that he didn’t directly address the team’s shortcomings or take ownership of the early playoff exit.
One fan cut straight to the point, calling it a “Soft a*s mentality,” echoing the sentiment that Redick’s comments lacked accountability or urgency.
Another added, “Not reading all that — you’re fired next season, my guy,” clearly fed up with the perceived excuses and already calling for change.

The criticism didn’t stop there. One fan pushed back on Redick’s claim that the team played hard enough, saying, “They did not play hard enough lol,” referencing stretches of the game where the Lakers looked disorganized and lifeless on defense.

Another fan bluntly wrote: “FIRE JJ REDICK ASAP,” showing just how quickly the tide has turned against the rookie coach.

Some targeted Redick’s game management. “You had no adjustments bro,” one post read, pointing to a major critique of Redick’s in-game strategy throughout the series, as the Timberwolves consistently controlled tempo and execution.

Then there was the sarcasm, with one user mocking: “Maybe it’s the court we were playing on was just too damn big.”

Lakers Fall Short Against Timberwolves’ Grit
While Lakers’ stars like Luka Dončić (28 PTS), LeBron James (22 PTS), Rui Hachimura (23 PTS), and Austin Reaves (12 PTS) gave everything they had, the Timberwolves held firm, keeping their composure to send L.A. home.
On top of that, Timberwolves star Rudy Gobert delivered the knockout blow with 27 points and 24 rebounds, ultimately burying the Lakers for good.
But for many fans, the final straw wasn’t just the loss — it was the tone Redick struck after it.
