Tyrese Haliburton’s Father Defends Controversial Confrontation With Giannis Antetokounmpo

Tyrese Haliburton's father defends his controversial Game 5 confrontation with Giannis Antetokounmpo, attributing it to a misunderstanding.

Tyrese Haliburton led the Indiana Pacers to a 119-118 overtime home victory during Tuesday’s Game 5 first-round playoff clash against the Milwaukee Bucks. Afterward, the star point guard’s father, John, engaged in a controversial postgame altercation with Bucks superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The elder Haliburton appeared to gloat about his son’s 4-1 series victory and promptly apologized online. However, the following day, he issued a lengthy defense of his actions.

Tyrese Haliburton’s Father Breaks Down His Clash With Giannis Antetokounmpo

Tyrese Haliburton capped off Indiana’s 8-0 closing run in Game 5 with a game-winning layup with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime. Following the final buzzer, his father ran onto the court and approached a disheartened Antetokounmpo, who was standing with his hands on his hips.

John Haliburton could be seen waving a towel featuring a picture of his son in the two-time MVP’s face, seemingly rubbing in the last-second victory.

Shortly after, he went viral for engaging in a tense head-to-head dispute with the nine-time All-Star, which resulted in the two being separated.

After Antetokounmpo called him out postgame, noting that he felt “disrespected,” John took to X to make amends for his questionable behavior.

“I sincerely apologize to Giannis, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Pacers organization for my actions following tonight’s game. This was not a good reflection on our sport or my son and I will not make that mistake again,” he wrote.

However, the outspoken parent changed his tune during an interview with TMJ4 News on Wednesday, claiming that he never tried to disparage Antetokounmpo.

“When I turned, it might have seemed like I was looking at him, but I really wasn’t. I was looking through him,” the senior Haliburton said. “That’s how it was in the moment. I know it looked like I was staring him down, but it wasn’t like that.”

John added that despite repeatedly “yelling yayyy!” in Antetokounmpo’s face, the two initially didn’t trade barbs. He then noted that they made up after “The Greek Freak” approached him again to confront him for “disrespecting” him.

“I said to him, ‘I was not trying to disrespect you,'” Haliburton’s father said. “Because I wasn’t. I’m telling you, I did not do that on purpose, I really did not. And then I said to him, ‘I love you.’ He said back to me, ‘I love you,’ we patted chests, he gave us a thumbs up, and he walked away.”

Antetokounmpo’s Postgame Comments Contradict Haliburton’s Father’s Account

John Haliburton’s recounting of Tuesday’s postgame incident contradicted Antetokounmpo’s comments. In his postgame interview, the 2021 NBA champion noted that while John’s excitement for his son was warranted, his word choice wasn’t.

“I’m happy for him, I’m happy for his son, and I’m happy that he’s happy for his son,” Antetokounmpo said. “That’s how you’re supposed to feel. But coming to me and disrespecting me and cursing at me, I think, is totally unacceptable.”

Nevertheless, Antetokounmpo added that he and Haliburton’s pops “talked” and are “in a good place.” So, the two appear to have put the situation behind them.
