Ex-Mavericks Guard Questions Stephen Curry’s Credibility as ‘Greatest Point Guard of All Time’

Former Mavericks guard Theo Pinson questions Stephen Curry’s status as the greatest PG ever, claiming Magic Johnson holds the crown.

The NBA has one of the most passionate fan bases in the sports scene, making it an open table for several opinions. As for the greatest point guard debate, it just got a little more heated — and this time, Stephen Curry is right at the center of it.

Former Dallas Mavericks guard Theo Pinson took to his podcast to throw some serious shade at the Golden State Warriors superstar, questioning whether Curry even qualifies as a “true” point guard. And let’s just say, NBA fans are divided on this point.

Stephen Curry Is Not the Greatest Point Guard?

During an episode of “To The Baha” podcast, Pinson didn’t hold back on his thoughts about Curry’s all-time status.

“When you hear Stephen Curry, do you think point guard?” Pinson asked. “No. He happens to play [point guard], but he’s not the greatest point guard of all time.”

Pinson then pushed his point further by saying, “You only say point guard because he’s short.” And then, he went for the GOAT argument clincher.

“The greatest point guard of all time is Magic Johnson. My opinion.”

Pinson’s main gripe? He believes Curry doesn’t fit the traditional mold of a floor general. In his eyes, Curry is a scorer first, not the pass-first, orchestrating type like Magic Johnson was. And honestly? He’s not the first person to make this argument.

Is Curry Even a Point Guard?

This isn’t a new conversation. Curry has redefined what it means to play point guard, shifting from the traditional pass-heavy role to a scoring machine who bends defenses with his shooting gravity.

The argument against Curry?

  • He doesn’t rack up assists like Chris Paul or John Stockton.
  • He plays off the ball a lot, letting Draymond Green handle facilitating duties.
  • He’s more of a scoring threat than a playmaker.

The argument supporting Curry?

  • He completely changed the game, making 3-point shooting the most dominant weapon in basketball.
  • He’s a true leader for the Warriors’ dynasty, has four titles, and two MVPs.
  • He’s an elite passer and floor general in his unique way.

Johnson is undoubtedly a no-brainer when it comes to the GOAT point guard discussion, so Pinson isn’t shooting blind here. But having said that, the Curry vs. Johnson GOAT point guard debate isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

One thing that is for sure is that Curry doesn’t need everyone’s validation. His rings, MVPs, and impact speak for themselves.

As for Pinson? He has his own opinion. But the real question is, does it actually change anything? Probably not. For the majority of basketball fans, he is still Stephen “Freaking” Curry!
