LeBron James Contract: New Details Emerge About the NBA Legend’s $8,000,000 Deal With 76ers

LeBron James has officially signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, and his new contract includes a special clause.

The NBA world was anxiously waiting for LeBron James to make his latest free-agency decision. The 22-time All-Star did just that Friday, announcing he would join the Philadelphia 76ers after weeks of deliberations.

James is signing a two-year deal worth just $8 million, with a player option in the second season. A new development has now added another layer of intrigue to his bargain contract.

LeBron James Has Special Clause in 76ers Contract

ESPN insider Shams Charania revealed Sunday that James will also have a 15% trade kicker as part of his new deal.

The trade kicker comes in place of a true no-trade clause, as James was not eligible to add one this time around. The purpose of such a provision is to deter teams from trading a player. However, the 76ers could still move James once he becomes eligible to be dealt and pay a minuscule fee in NBA terms.

The lack of a no-trade clause does keep the possibility open of James playing for yet another team before his storied career comes to an end. Yet it would likely take a total 76ers collapse for that idea to even cross the organization’s mind after landing the living legend.

This is a new reality for James after making a fortune throughout his career. He now goes from making $52.6 million last year with the Los Angeles Lakers to a relatively modest sum of $3.9 million in Philadelphia this upcoming season.

As PFSN’s Alex Kennedy noted, that is less than some top college stars are set to earn via NIL money this year.

James has made his money at this point. The trade kicker seems to be a mere formality for someone of his status. But it would at least ensure him some compensation if the 76ers move him this season or next. James has always made it clear he is business savvy, and this is yet another example.

This contract seems to affirm James’ stance that his final seasons are solely focused on chasing his fifth NBA title. He could have taken bigger money elsewhere, continuing to maximize his earning potential before calling it a career.

The caveat is that James has already earned generational wealth and will continue to do so off the court for years to come. The trade kicker may just be an act of goodwill by a team thrilled to have the four-time MVP choose them.

James’ focus now turns to helping the 76ers win a title for the first time since 1983. If he can achieve that goal, his contributions would come at an all-time discount.
