LeBron James has likely reached his final destination before he hangs it up as one of the greatest basketball players in history.
After announcing his return to the Eastern Conference by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year deal, many were shocked that he decided not to return to Cleveland for a third stint. NBA insider Brian Windhorst detailed three main reasons why he likely didn’t come home to the Cavs.

The Cleveland Cavaliers couldn’t convince James to return. As a kid from Ohio, James brought his hometown team to glory in what is one of the most memorable championships in NBA history. With James getting ready to retire soon, he wants to compete. Although the Cavaliers have a great roster, three main issues hurt their chances.
“In the end, there were three strikes against Cleveland: Family not being an issue in LeBron’s choice, the front office not making a deal for [Jaylen Brown], and the Cavs’ roster not featuring [Darius Garland]. To say it was one of these factors more than the other might be missing the big picture,” said Windhorst.
It was never meant to be a homecoming for James. At this point in his career, family wasn’t playing a big role in his decision, which took away the Cavaliers’ biggest advantage over other teams.
Brown had been rumored to have played his last game in Boston after they were eliminated by the 76ers in the 2026 playoffs. The Cavaliers didn’t make the move to improve, and the 76ers did by acquiring Brown from one of their biggest rivals. Then, James followed suit to sign with the 76ers to team up with Brown. If the Cavs landed Brown, this could be a whole different story, and James may be coming home once more.
The Cavaliers made moves to go all in with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. They moved two-time All-Star Darius Garland to bring in former MVP James Harden to try to get them over the hump. Instead, Harden’s playoff inconsistencies hurt them, as they were embarrassed by Jalen Brunson and the Knicks.
The Cavaliers likely weren’t expecting that deal to be one of the three strikes that would take them out of the running for their greatest ever player. As Garland’s absence hurt the Cavaliers, they’re stuck with Harden, Mitchell, and Mobley as their big three, with James going elsewhere to form a super team in Philadelphia.
Although the New York Knicks put up one of the most dominant playoff runs in NBA history, the 76ers may have become the new favorites in the Eastern Conference. A lineup of Tyrese Maxey, Brown, James, VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid is horrifying for opponents as 76ers fans look to finally call The Process an undisputed success with a championship in 2027.
