Klay Thompson was once seen as one of the NBA’s greatest shooters, teaming up with Stephen Curry to form the iconic Splash Brothers for the Golden State Warriors.
Warriors fans struggled to accept the end of that era when Thompson left for the Dallas Mavericks, but his latest remarks suggest a reunion with his former team.
Klay Thompson Hints at Possible Warriors Return with Latest Comments
Thompson was the No. 11 overall pick for the Warriors in the 2011 NBA Draft and played a big role in building them into one of the league’s greatest dynasties. He was known for his elite shooting and strong perimeter defense, and helped the franchise win four NBA championships.
Since Thompson left after the 2023-24 season, the Warriors have not had much success in the playoffs. Though they have had Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green leading the roster, the Warriors did not re-establish themselves as serious championship contenders.
With the five-time All-Star set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season, rumors about a reunion have continued to grow. Thompson was asked directly whether he sees himself returning to Golden State for a fan event this week, and he didn’t rule it out.
“Shoot, I don’t know,” he said. “I got one year on my deal. It’d be nice to end it in Golden State.”

The comment followed another viral interaction in which a fan told him, “We miss you in the Warriors, buddy.”
Thompson responded with a message that is sure to excite many Golden State supporters.
“Oh, thank you, I know. Never say never,” Thompson said.
Thompson’s exit from Golden State followed months of tension over contract negotiations during the final year of his 13-season tenure with the franchise. A split became increasingly likely, and he later signed a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks.
The move seemed promising at that time, as Thompson expected to compete alongside Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving after Dallas had just reached the NBA Finals.
However, the Mavericks traded Dončić for Anthony Davis, while Irving suffered a season-ending injury, leaving Thompson on a team that failed to make the postseason in each of his first two years in Dallas.
Thompson’s production also declined, as he averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.3 blocks on 39.3% shooting in 69 games last season.
By comparison, he averaged 19.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists over 793 regular-season games with the Warriors.
Though there have been no reports of the Warriors actively pursuing a reunion, the 36-year-old’s comments point to an ideal move to a franchise where he played his best basketball.
