It’s been an incredible rise for super-agent Rich Paul, from humble beginnings and a stint at Nike to founding Klutch Sports and becoming LeBron James’ agent. His rise is inspiring to many, and in an interview, Paul recalls how he got his start.
Rich Paul Recalls Inspiring Journey To End Up LeBron James’ Agent
On Fred VanVleet’s Unguarded Podcast, Paul shared his story with the Houston Rockets’ veteran point guard.
“I worked at Nike for years; people don’t understand the journey. I didn’t become LeBron’s agent until his 9th year in the league.” By saying ‘people don’t understand the journey,’ he addresses critics who feel he built his Klutch Sports empire because of his close relationship with James.
Paul reaffirms that his rise to super-agent status was anything but easy; he had to work from the bottom up to get to where he is today.
He was a longtime friend of James, and they respected each other as business partners, but he took him on as a client only much later and made it clear there wasn’t a specific plan for him in his relationship with James; he had to build that empire himself.
When asked about his timeline to become an agent whilst being a partner for LRMR marketing agency alongside James: “I worked at Nike, we had LRMR, and I worked at a previous agency in ’08…2008 is when I got that opportunity. It wasn’t like there was a plan for me.”

Paul then talked about his patience and the lesson he learned back then, which prompted him to sign clients for himself and break away from CAA.
Paul worked and studied his craft as an agent under mentor Leon Rose at CAA before breaking away to form Klutch Sports and making James his main client in 2012, along with Thompson, Joseph, and Eric Bledsoe. Meanwhile, incidentally, Rose is now the President of the NBA Champion New York Knicks.
“First of all, I realized that people are definitely gonna be for themselves way before they are gonna be for you, and you gotta make something happen on your own…When I signed Johnny Flynn, I was not a registered agent. I signed Tristan Thompson and Corey Joseph. I was not a registered agent. And there were times that I had the only first rounder.”
It wasn’t about money or a big office, recalls Paul on Unguarded; he prioritized relationships above all. And the rest is history.
Many will now be wondering where his client and friend, LeBron James, is headed next, as he is currently a free agent weighing up whether to return to his hometown of Cleveland, to Miami, or perhaps another destination entirely.
Some two weeks into free agency, the NBA legend’s next team is going to be fascinating. No doubt Paul is working out the deal as we speak.
