The Los Angeles Lakers wasted little time strengthening their roster in free agency, agreeing to a four-year, $60 million contract with Quentin Grimes.
The deal gives the team a dependable two-way guard and reunites Grimes with Luka Dončić, and the two have already played together earlier.
Quentin Grimes Believes Luka Dončić Is A One-Of-One Talent
Grimes is already looking forward to playing with Dončić again. After the signing was announced, the 26-year-old said he believes playing alongside the Lakers superstar will help him play his best basketball.
Recently, Grimes did not hold back when describing what separates the Slovenian from the rest of the NBA.
“I think really just his pace,” Grimes said during an appearance on ESPN LA’s Mason & Ireland. “Nobody in the NBA is really like 6’8 with that pace. And he plays with his own rhythm, his own cadence. He just puts you on his hip, and bumps you and shoots a fader over you. Or he can get all the way downhill and make plays, he’s got like one-of-one vision out there on the court. So his size, his pace, is just one of one.”
“He put 60 on my head when I was in New York. So I’m done being on that end of that anymore. So I’m good… “

Grimes experienced that firsthand in Dallas before both players were unexpectedly moved at the trade deadline during the Mavericks’ franchise-changing season.
Even though they played together for only a short time, Grimes shot a career-best 39.8% from 3-point range alongside Dončić, highlighting the latter’s ability to get the best out of his teammate.
Grimes also joked that he was on the wrong side of one of Doncic’s greatest performances, his unforgettable 60-point game against the New York Knicks in December 2022.
“He put 60 on my head when I was in New York. So I’m done being on that end of that anymore. I get to be on the offensive end again with him. His pace is just one of one in the NBA.”
The connection between the two extends well beyond the game. Grimes revealed that Dončić reached out almost immediately after news of the Lakers deal became public.
“We have a really good relationship. He was the first one to text me right when the news broke, within like five minutes. So that’s my guy for sure. It’s gonna be a lot of fun to play with him again.”
That connection likely made the Lakers feel even better about signing Grimes. Reports said the team stayed in regular contact with Dončić before free agency began, showing that he had a voice in the Lakers’ roster plans.
