‘They Have Been Very Active’ – Shams Charania Drops Surprising Update On LeBron James’ Lakers Future Ahead Of NBA Free Agency

Shams Charania think the Los Angeles Lakers are checking the trade market to acquire talent to build around LeBron James.

For most, NBA free agency offers players the opportunity to pursue their careers in two distinct yet inextricably linked directions. First, the ability to parlay skills into lucrative, secure long-term contracts. Regardless of your status as a star or reserve player, a potentially big-money payday is attractive.

Meanwhile, others may take a little less money to build a winner and compete for a championship. Knicks guard Jalen Brunson took less money to stay in New York, granting the team salary cap room to fill out the roster.

NBA Insider Asserts the Lakers Will Trade for Talent to Help LeBron James

Still, there is a last category, saved for the elite, accomplished players like Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James. An insider offers a different take on James’s free agency.

With almost two decades of service, James finds himself with free agency on the horizon. The league’s all-time leading scorer turns on December 30. Yet he still averaged 20.9 points per game, playing 33.2 minutes. ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania believes the Lakers are working on a surprise in James’ free agency process.

“They’ve got about $50 million in cap space. They’ve been seeking out trade suitors. If they are able to find a player or two to put in there, that impacts what they can offer LeBron.” Charania said.

Before Charania spoke, the belief remained that the Lakers were Luka Doncic’s team, that management would choose to build around him.

Granted, they would eventually offer James a deal, but probably not one commensurate with what the multiple-time All-Star thought he deserved. Now, it appears as though the team will still center around teh four-time NBA MVP. Although this may be true, Charania unveiled a potential obstacle.

“They have been very active in doing the trade aspect of all of this. My understanding is there hasn’t been an offer out to LeBron James yet as far as his free agency”

This week, the team extended shooting guard Austin Reaves. As a result, the starting backcourt looks set. However, power forward and center remain up in the air. With that said, Dončić made it clear that the team desperately needs better play from the center position. While starter Deandre Ayton is still under contract, his point stands.

Finding rebounders, post scorers, and shot blockers could mean the difference for the team going forward. If the Lakers want to snag a post player or two, would that do enough to keep James in Los Angeles?

The Lakers finished 53-29 in the regular season, good enough for fourth in the Western Conference. It would be interesting to see how Rob Pelinka and Co. build their roster for the 2026-27 season.
