Jeff Goodman Sends 8-Word Message Calling Out Former Employer ESPN’s Merchandising Deals With Top Recruits

Basketball analyst Jeff Goodman sarcastically reacted to ESPN's merchandising deals with top prospects Kaleena Smith and Beckham Black.

Sports broadcasting giant ESPN has finalized unprecedented merchandising deals with top high school basketball prospects Kaleena Smith and Beckham Black.

The agreement will feature Smith, the No. 1-ranked girls player in SportsCenter NEXT’s Class of 2027, and Black, the No. 2-ranked boys player, as the faces of the brand’s new content and merchandise initiative.

Jeff Goodman Reacts to ESPN’s Deals With Top High School Basketball Stars

Though the transaction is considered historic for the media giant, former ESPN employee and basketball analyst Jeff Goodman was not pleased with the matter, sarcastically calling out the network’s officials for an apparent conflict of interest.

Goodman responded to a post by ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania, who reported that the sports media giant reached an agreement with Smith and Black as the primary endorsers of SportsCenter NEXT’s new merchandise line. The analyst suspects ESPN has a conflict of interest in the deal and offered an eight-word comment that sarcastically described his position.

“Not a conflict of interest at all. LOL,” Goodman, who is also the co-founder of Field of 68, wrote on X.

The rankings are compiled to guide collegiate programs in signing top-ranked high school prospects and to strengthen their campaigns throughout each NCAA season.

But Goodman and other sports analysts expressed concern that ESPN would give players who endorse SportsCenter NEXT content an unfair advantage. They fear that the new development would compromise the fairness and impartiality of the ranking mechanism.

Former ESPN host Jemele Hill also questioned the deal, expecting it to affect how the sports media conglomerate conducts its high school rankings.

“Now this poses some very interesting ethical questions, considering ESPN does high school rankings. Hmm,” Hill wrote.

Such conflicts of interest could affect any network or company. Sports fans, the primary audience for these rankings, may seek an unbiased alternative if they believe the rankings favor players affiliated with the brand.

As part of the collaboration, Smith and Black will be featured across various brand-related content, including interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. In addition to becoming the faces of SportsCenter NEXT’s merchandise collection, the collaboration aims to fast-track the network’s expansion, which will also target the high school demographic.

Black, the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black, was integral to Southeastern Prep’s surge to the Grind Session World Championship final. He averaged 16.4 points per game and recorded 16 points and 11 rebounds in the team’s 68-63 loss to Fort Lauderdale Prolific Prep (Florida).

Smith, on the other hand, is a five-star point guard who led her school, Ontario Christian (California), to the open division crown at the 2026 CIF State Girls Basketball Championships. She finished her junior year averaging 31.5 ppg.
