‘The Elephant in the Room’ — Karl-Anthony Towns Delivers Brutally Honest Verdict on Knicks’ Historic Game 4 Win

Karl-Anthony Towns admits the New York Knicks did not play well in Game 4, demanding corrections ahead of Game 5 vs. Spurs.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ father, Karl Sr., once saw his NBA dream shattered, but his son is now just one win away from delivering a championship to the New York Knicks.

Despite a 3-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs, Towns is still pushing for more heading into Game 5 and discussed New York’s lack of intensity, which went under the radar amid San Antonio’s historic Game 4 collapse.

Karl-Anthony Towns Sets Tone with Brutal Honesty Ahead of Knicks’ Game 5

The Knicks arrived at Frost Bank Center for practice on Friday ahead of Game 5, and Towns offered a blunt assessment of his team’s thrilling comeback on Wednesday night.

“We understand the magnitude of locking back in, getting back to work. Of course that night, we enjoyed the shell shock of what happened, but we understood the next morning we had to get back to work,” Towns said.

“And also in that moment of jubilation, the moment of absolute joy, we have to talk about the elephant in the room was that we just didn’t play well at all and we put ourselves in that deficit,” he continued.

“So, while there is joy, there is also frustration that we even allowed ourselves to be in that kind of position… So, there was a lot to work on, there’s a lot to talk about, there was a lot to correct.”

Towns’ comment came as the Knicks looked flat in the opening half of Game 4, with the Spurs racing to a 41-22 lead after the first quarter.

San Antonio extended its momentum to score 76 first-half points and build a 27-point halftime advantage before the Knicks surged back in the second half to completely change the game to cut down a historic 29-point deficit.

If the Spurs had avoided a few costly late-game mistakes, they might have even tied the series. However, comments from Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs during Friday’s media availability suggested confidence that they can clean up those errors moving forward.

As for Towns, he has been a key driving force in New York’s playoff run, and in Game 4, he extended his streak to 18 straight postseason games with a positive plus-minus, the longest such run recorded since tracking began in 1997.

If the Knicks want to close out the title, they will need to start games with far more control and intensity to secure their first NBA championship in 53 years.

The hype surrounding the series reflects those stakes, with the 2026 Finals becoming the most-watched Finals through four games since 1998. Game 4 alone drew 20.9 million viewers and peaked at 23.2 million, and Game 5 is expected to draw even bigger numbers.
