“I hereby direct that bedtimes in the City of New York are repealed during the NBA Finals so that kids of all ages can root for their New York Knicks.”
That was the message from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani a few days ago. The light-hearted statement showed just how much this moment means not only to basketball fans but also to the city itself. With the Knicks now holding a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals series against the San Antonio Spurs, the excitement across New York has reached another level.
Zohran Mamdani’s Recent Comment Regarding the Knicks Before Game 3 of the Finals
Before Game 3 on Monday night, Mamdani, in an interview with “The Athletic,” stated that seeing the Knicks reach the NBA Finals after a 27-year wait means a lot to the city and its fans.
“This moment means everything for so many across the city,” Mamdani said in the interview.
Mamdani also explained that a city as diverse as New York has, for the time being, turned into a small town where everyone is united by one dream. It is seeing the Knicks win an NBA championship.
“It feels like the transformation of the world’s greatest city into the world’s greatest small town, where not only are we all thinking about the same thing, but we’re all praying for the same thing,” Mamdani added.
On the court, the team is being led by Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson. Towns has been particularly good on the offensive end ever since the playoffs began.
In the first two Finals games, he has averaged 19.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. Brunson, on the other hand, is averaging 25 points, four rebounds, and four assists per game in the Finals.
The team’s form was clearly visible in Game 2. Although New York had a slow start and trailed by nine points after the first quarter, the Knicks gradually worked their way back, and by halftime, they were leading by four points.
Then, in the fourth quarter, the Knicks actually took the biggest lead of the game, which was 14 points. They held on and won 105-104.
Now, in addition to the performances on the court, several external factors could further motivate the Knicks.
A very interesting point is that no team in NBA history has won a Finals series after losing the first two games at home, which puts even more pressure on the Spurs. On top of that, President Donald Trump is expected to attend Game 3.
Still, for many New Yorkers, the biggest motivation remains the chance to bring a championship back to the city. As Mamdani said, this run has united the city in a special way.
