James Harden added to his extensive history of playoff disappointments during Tuesday’s Game 1 Eastern Conference finals matchup against the New York Knicks. The 11-time All-Star appeared helpless as he was ruthlessly targeted on defense down the stretch while the Cleveland Cavaliers squandered a 22-point fourth-quarter lead.
After Cleveland’s stunning 115-104 overtime loss at Madison Square Garden, NFL legend Shannon Sharpe bluntly addressed Harden’s defensive shortcomings, drawing an unflattering comparison to Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Dončić.

Cleveland was firmly in the driver’s seat in Game 1, leading 93-71 with 7:52 remaining, when New York flipped a switch and began relentlessly attacking Harden.
Knicks star Jalen Brunson had his way with the 36-year-old, repeatedly blowing by him for momentum-shifting baskets during New York’s improbable 18-1 run to pull within striking distance in the final minutes.

Harden’s defensive issues persisted as the Knicks capped off a staggering 44-11 game-closing run behind Brunson’s 38-point explosion, with the former seeming disengaged at times.

As expected, Harden, whose postseason letdowns have been well documented, caught major flak after the Cavaliers’ implosion, with Sharpe among the 17-year veteran’s chief critics.
“Theoretically, you could go at either one of them, ’cause neither one of them are outstanding defenders, but James Harden has been atrocious. James Harden is no better than Luka,” Sharpe blasted Harden’s defense on Tuesday’s edition of “Nightcap.”
“I hate to even bring that up, but we know they’re outstanding guys on the offensive end, but the thing is, you can’t let them relax on the defensive end. You’ve got to go at them, and that’s what the Knicks did.”
Aside from Harden’s defensive slip-ups, he also struggled mightily offensively. The 2018 MVP finished with 15 points and 3 assists on just 5-for-16 shooting from the field (31.3%) and 1-for-8 shooting from 3-point range (12.5%) while committing 6 turnovers.
“This is the sixth game in which he’s had more turnovers than buckets this playoffs,” Sharpe shared. “They’ve played 15 games now. In six of those games, he’s had more turnovers than baskets made, and we’re talking about a top 75 player, we’re talking about one of the great players of this generation.”

Through 15 2026 postseason outings, Harden is averaging 19.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. However, he is shooting just 40.8% overall and 31.8% from deep while committing 4.9 turnovers a night.
Despite the three-time NBA scoring champion’s uneven playoff run, Cleveland has continuously bounced back, surviving two Game 7s and overcoming a 2-0 series deficit in Round 2 against the No. 1-seeded Detroit Pistons.
Donovan Mitchell and Co. will look to put Tuesday’s crushing defeat behind them during Thursday’s Game 2 clash in New York, with limiting Brunson’s paint penetration likely ranking among their top priorities.
