Jalen Duren’s production has fallen off a cliff in the 2026 NBA playoffs after his breakout fourth season with the Detroit Pistons.
Duren delivered another forgettable performance in Wednesday’s 117-113 Game 5 home loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers before getting benched in the fourth quarter and overtime, prompting harsh criticism and questions about his future.
Jalen Duren’s Game 5 Nightmare vs. Cavaliers Fuels Scrutiny
Duren was a beast in the regular season, thriving in the interior as a nightly double-double threat and solid defender for the No. 1-seeded Pistons (60-22). Behind a career-best 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on 65.0% shooting, the 22-year-old secured his first All-Star selection, with buzz mounting about his prospects of landing a max contract.
Duren will be a restricted free agent this offseason, and could reportedly earn up to five years and roughly $239 million. However, his muted postseason output has since quieted those discussions, with doubts rising about the big man’s future in Detroit.
While Duren vowed “to be better” ahead of Game 5, with the Eastern Conference semifinal series tied 2-2, he once again withered under the spotlight. Duren mustered just 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in 25 minutes, logging a game-worst minus-16 plus-minus before being benched down the stretch.
Duren watched as his team squandered a 9-point lead in the final three minutes of regulation before running out of gas in overtime, wasting star guard Cade Cunningham’s game-high 39-point effort.
While a controversial no-call to end regulation also caused a stir, Duren’s continued no-show left the NBA community on X frustrated and confused.
“What a massive choke job by the Pistons. No answer on offense as soon as Cavs started trapping Cade with 3 minutes left. Duren totally lost his powers. [Tobias] Harris has fallen back down to earth. Kevin Huerter, their huge trade deadline acquisition, played 3:22. It’s Cade or nothing,” Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor blasted Duren and Co.

“Even if Pistons come out of this series, they have no shot in hell of winning anything this season because Jalen Duren might have had the most fraudulent regular season of all time. How do you go from 20ppg to 10ppg in playoffs? Dude shaved off like $100M worth of pay day,” self-described NBA strategist Jim Park slammed Duren.

“Jalen Duren has lost a lot of money from these playoffs. Before the postseason, expectations around the league were that Duren would see upwards of $200M due to his All-NBA-like season. It’s possible he’s lost over $50M from these playoffs alone,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel forecasted.

“I don’t know how you pay Jalen Duren the max. Can’t even really touch the floor in a critical OVERTIME of a playoff game,” Cleveland podcaster Mack Perry weighed in.

Through five playoff outings vs. the Cavaliers, Duren is averaging 9.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game, shooting just 46.2%.

After dropping three straight contests to fall behind 3-2 in the series, the Pistons are now in danger of elimination during Friday’s Game 6 showdown in Cleveland.
