The Los Angeles Lakers saw their turbulent season die a quiet death. The Oklahoma City Thunder completed a swift second-round sweep with a 115-110 victory in Game 4 at the Crypto.com Arena on Monday night.
Much of the spotlight fell on LeBron James, who is at a crucial stage in his 23-year NBA career. While the 41-year-old offered little clarity on a return to the court next season, the media remains obsessed with his looming free agency decision.
And some believe the era should end now.
Rob Parker Explains His Solution for LeBron James’ Free Agency Dilemma
James pushed himself to the utmost limit to stave off elimination for the Lakers. He played 40 minutes Monday night, recording 24 points and 12 rebounds. However, the offensive burden proved too heavy, and Oklahoma City’s dominance compounded Los Angeles’ struggles to keep their season alive.
Without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, James burned through his tank, carrying the Lakers through Round 1 against the Houston Rockets.
Reaves’ return sparked some hope, but the Thunder proved too strong for JJ Redick’s side.
NBA analyst Rob Parker did not hold back his assessment of the Lakers’ early playoff exit and James’ career trajectory during a recent broadcast of “The Odd Couple w/ Rob Parker & Kelvin Washington.”
“I have the solution for LeBron James,” Parker stated. “It won’t take long. Retire! I know you didn’t get the sendoff you wanted, [but] you got everything else. There is nothing left for you to continue to play, other than to stockpile numbers that are meaningless and can’t get you anywhere else.”
Highlighting the flaws of the current Lakers roster as the reason for James to step aside, Parker continued, “This team, the way it’s constructed right now, is not going anywhere. You’ve done everything you wanted. You compiled all these numbers, you’re the all-time leading scorer, you won four championships.”
“My point is, give it a break. The worst thing you wanna be is stick around too long. You’ve already been around too long,” Parker concluded.
Despite the overwhelming calls for retirement, James has shown he’s still got it, provided he’s around the right supporting cast. During the playoffs, he averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 6.7 rebounds across 10 games.
While many have touted the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors as potential suitors for the megastar, a return to Los Angeles has not been ruled out.
However, Nick Wright, weighing in on James’ options, did not sign off on the idea of the 41-year-old returning to the Lakers. Instead, he pointed to a Cavs’ reunion or an ‘unbelievable final chapter’ with the New York Knicks.
Regardless of what the pundits and analysts speculate, James holds the freedom to hit the open market and chase a fifth with a different franchise.
