Former NBA lottery pick Rashad McCants went in on LeBron James a day after the Los Angeles Lakers were swept out of the second round of the playoffs by the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
McCants delivered a ruthless assessment of James’ historic 23rd season and dubbed the four-time MVP’s entire eight-year tenure with LA a disappointment, triggering harsh reactions from the NBA world.
Rashad McCants Gets Torched for Calling Out 41-Year-Old LeBron James
James continued defying Father Time in Year 23, securing his record-extending 22nd All-Star selection and playing a vital part in LA locking up a top-four seed (53-29) in the cutthroat Western Conference.
The 41-year-old was then forced back into a primary offensive role in the postseason, overcoming the absence of his superstar teammate Luka Dončić (hamstring) to advance to Round 2.
While the undermanned Lakers were ultimately outmatched on both ends against OKC, James still delivered strong production for his age, averaging 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.8 assists across four games.
Still, McCants, who lasted only four seasons in the league after getting selected 14th in the 2005 NBA Draft, was unimpressed by James. On Tuesday’s edition of “Gil’s Arena,” the 41-year-old graded James’ latest campaign a C, citing the Lakers veteran’s goal to be considered the greatest player ever.
“I expect more from somebody that’s chasing the GOAT,” McCants said. “It’s the highest standard you can be compared to. So, you have to outplay and outdo everybody all the time. There’s no rest, there’s no excuses, there’s no lack of accountability.”

McCants also claimed that the four-time NBA champion, who led LA to the 2020 title, has continually come up short in high-stakes moments with the franchise.
“I think in the last eight years, we’ve seen the number one not get it done when it counts,” McCants asserted.
Rashad McCants says he’s holding LeBron James accountable for getting swept:
“He said in his press conference being a third option he’s never done it before, not good at thriving at it he thinks he did thrive at it then moving back to his original position number one. Feel like… pic.twitter.com/lZu9DNDwHW

Considering James’ vast accomplishments with the Lakers and McCants’ brief pro career, the NBA community on X didn’t take too kindly to his blunt critique.
“What is a Rashad McCants? Ohhhhh wait! Guy that averaged 6 shots a game and was out of the league by 24. That guy!” one user quipped.

“So I guess [Nikola] Jokić, Giannis [Antetokounmpo], etc. didn’t have success in 8 years. On another note, when has Rashad McCants ever got it done?” one observer asked.

Meanwhile, some didn’t even take McCants’ arguments seriously.
“He tryna b funny. LeBron won a title as a Laker, mission is filled,” one account remarked.

Regardless, should James further extend his illustrious career into unprecedented territory, he is expected to have numerous free agency suitors this summer, with teams lining up to offer the future Hall of Famer a shot at his fifth championship.
