‘Insane Thing to Say’ — NBA World Reacts to Spurs HC Mitch Johnson’s Officiating Criticism After Victor Wembanyama’s Game 4 Ejection

The NBA world pushes back after Spurs coach Mitch Johnson defends Victor Wembanyama following his controversial Game 4 ejection vs. the Wolves.

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs suffered a potentially costly setback after the superstar center was ejected during Sunday’s 114-109 Game 4 road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, it was Spurs coach Mitch Johnson who drew much of the attention postgame, as his comments defending Wembanyama’s controversial actions sparked immediate backlash from the NBA world.

After securing an offensive rebound over Naz Reid early in the second quarter, Wembanyama turned out of a double-team and caught Reid with a hard elbow to the jaw and neck area.

Officials initially called a foul on the floor before reviewing the play and upgrading it to a flagrant 2, resulting in the first ejection of Wembanyama’s career.

Consequently, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, who entered Game 4 averaging 21.9 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 5.0 blocks per game during his first postseason run, saw his night end after only 12 minutes with a modest stat line of 4 points and 4 rebounds on 2-for-5 shooting.

Following the loss, Johnson attempted to explain the mounting frustration surrounding his franchise star.

“It’s getting to a point that if the people that are in charge of controlling the game and protecting the physicality of the game don’t do that, then at some point, he’s going to have to protect himself,” Johnson said.

That explanation did not sit well with many around the league.

On The Prowl reacted by posting on X, “That sure is quite the quote.”

Other reactions were much sharper. @BronGotGame wrote, “Protect himself by assaulting another player because he got doubled?😭😭😭 sick.”

Meanwhile, Wolves podcast host Jack Borman criticized the messaging from San Antonio’s side, writing, “I am not an NBA head coach and never will be, but I probably wouldn’t be saying I’m glad my star player crashed out, elbowed another player in the face, got ejected, and changed the complexion of the series.”

@philfanacc quipped, “Bruh, you woulda thought we was punching him in his chest over n over n over again,” while another user sarcastically added, “It’s tough to get boxed out.”

Another X handle also piled on, asserting, “Maybe if he didn’t flop around like a baby fawn he wouldn’t have to worry about protecting himself.”

Meanwhile, @spainpnr took a dig at the Spurs coach, writing, “This is an insane thing to say.”

The online reactions to Johnson defending the Frenchman were undoubtedly harsh, but the bigger concern for the Spurs now is what happens next.

According to the NBA rulebook, any player assessed a flagrant foul penalty 2 is automatically ejected and fined a minimum of $2,000, with the incident then reviewed by the league office.

Additional punishment, including a larger fine or suspension, can also be handed down at the NBA commissioner’s discretion, depending on the severity of the play.

That possibility suddenly becomes massive for San Antonio. The Western Conference semifinal series between the Spurs and Wolves is now tied 2-2 after Minnesota’s Game 4 win. Any suspension for Wembanyama would dramatically alter the matchup heading into Game 5 at the Frost Bank Center.

The 22-year-old has been central to nearly everything the Spurs do on both ends of the floor this postseason. Along with leading the team in scoring and rebounding, his unparalleled defensive grit has disrupted Minnesota’s offense throughout the series.

If Wembanyama sits out Game 5, the Wolves could gain the upper hand at a crucial juncture that may decide the series.
