Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd recently rejected UNC’s offer to take over the program after Hubert Davis’ firing. Lloyd put a stop to the speculation, which stemmed from a rumored tension between him and Arizona athletic director Desireé Reed-Francois and cheeky comments that a “great coach” will take over to lead the Wildcats to greater success.
Tommy Lloyd Chooses Arizona Over UNC
The Arizona men’s basketball program has been making waves throughout the 2026 NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed, battling past LIU, Utah State, Arkansas, and Purdue to advance to the Final Four for the first time in 25 years.
Lloyd has gotten the team back to being a title contender, but there was speculation about his potential move to UNC after the Tar Heels fell short in the NCAA Tournament. Lloyd had a tense relationship with Arizona’s athletic director over revenue sharing, long-term support for basketball, and budget consistency.
However, the Wildcats inked him to an extension and made it clear that he no longer needs to report to the AD.
“Nothing, nothing, I promise you NOTHING, is knocking me off that path. You might call them ‘distractions,’ but it’s because you’re distracted,” Lloyd said. “That doesn’t mean I’m distracted.
“I’m happy to announce I’m staying at Arizona. We’ve been able to get some things done the past couple days.”
He signed a contract extension through the 2030-31 season. According to reports, he’ll earn $7.2 million next season while averaging $7.5 million over the new contract, while his staff receives a significant bump as well.

The recent development drew reactions from college basketball analysts, with CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander summarizing the entire scenario.
“Sources: UNC offered Tommy Lloyd a top-two contract in CBB. Lloyd took less to stay, but will still bump up to $7.2 million starting next season. Staff pool also will get a huge bump + incentives brought back to their contract structures,” he wrote. “He’ll also no longer report to the AD.”

ESPN writer Dan Wetzel asked whether there will be outrage about the tampering.
“Tommy Lloyd off the table for UNC. Also … will we have the same tampering outrage there is for players?”

WCNC sports director Nick Carboni pointed out that Lloyd used North Carolina’s interest as leverage to get a sweetheart deal with Arizona.
“Tommy Lloyd got a raise, got his friends a raise, and doesn’t have to talk to his boss anymore lol.”

Podcast host Ross Martin also noted that Lloyd had such a great opportunity to use his situation to his benefit, commenting: “Tommy Lloyd had SO much leverage. …. he no longer reports to the AD!”
