Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra’s defensive strategy wasn’t enough to contain Luka Dončić’s 60-point blitz.
The Los Angeles Lakers superstar had the first 60-burger for the franchise since the legendary Kobe Bryant. His offensive prowess was key as the Lakers notched up a 134-126 win over the Heat at the Kaseya Center on Thursday.

Why the Heat’s Defense Couldn’t Stop Luka Dončić
Speaking to reporters in the aftermath of the loss, Spoelstra could only lament how the Heat couldn’t contain the mercurial guard.
“It became just an incredible display of shotmaking, drawing fouls, etc.,” Spoelstra said, according to Heat reporter Zachary Weinberger. “We just probably weren’t active enough to get the ball out of his hands. … We didn’t get to enough stuff to keep him at least a little bit off-balance.”
The Heat had no answers as Dončić effortlessly got to his points despite the team’s slow start after their late arrival to Miami following their win over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday.
Dončić shot 18-of-30 from the field, 9-of-17 from the 3-point line, and 15-of-19 from the charity stripe. The shooting efforts saw LA erase the 15-point lead the Heat had built. He ended his night with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.
Double-teaming the All-Star guard did little to help the Heat as Dončić maneuvered and dodged the defense to get the ball swishing in. He found able assistance in LeBron James, who had a record night himself with a triple-double (19 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists).
Such was his dominance that MVP chants rang out. Dončić took the foul line in the final stretch of the game to deafening cheers from fans. With his performance, the guard has also made a case for his maiden NBA MVP as the Lakers continue their rich vein of form.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick hailed his superstar guard’s efforts, calling it a “superhero performance.” Per Yahoo! Sports, “I think he’s playing as well as anyone in basketball,” Redick said.
“He’s really elevated his play at a really important time for our team. He’s elevated the play of his teammates. … He’s one of the best and should be in the M-word conversation. Hopefully, people will start talking about that because he’s having as good a season as anyone.”
With the win, the Lakers extended their winning streak to eight games. They are now 45-25 in the West and third in the conference standings.
The Lakers are 9-1 in their last 10 games. The latest victory sees them further consolidate their position on the ladder.
Up next, Dončić and the Lakers head to Orlando to take on the Magic at the Kia Center on Saturday. They end their six-game road trip by squaring off against the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers.
