According to De’Aaron Fox, that includes a direct and sometimes blunt approach with teammates. As Wembanyama continues to establish himself as the face of the San Antonio Spurs, his voice and accountability are becoming more visible.
Fox provided a telling response when asked whether the Spurs star is always measured in how he holds teammates accountable or if he brings a sharper edge at times.
Speaking after the Spurs’ 119-115 win against the Clippers on Monday Night, Fox gave a clear look into Victor Wembanyama’s leadership style. “I mean, I think he’s definitely blunt sometimes, but I mean, especially when it’s not in the game, it comes off a little nicer,” Fox said. “But when it’s in the game, like we don’t, we’re in the heat of the moment. We don’t have time for you to try to find your words to soften this up a little bit.”
That statement says a lot about both players and about the environment the Spurs are building.

For a player this early in his career, Wembanyama’s willingness to be direct with teammates shows a level of comfort and confidence that is not common among young stars. At the same time, it reflects trust within the locker room.
Not every player responds well to blunt leadership, but in the right environment, it can be effective.
Fox’s answer also provides important context, as he presented Wembanyama’s tone as part of the team’s identity. In real time, especially during games, there is little room to soften a message. Communication has to be quick, clear, and direct.
That is often what leadership looks like at the highest level.

For the San Antonio Spurs, this is an encouraging sign. Wembanyama is already expected to lead through production. Against the Clippers, he recorded 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists. The two-time NBA All-Star is averaging 24.3 points, 2.9 assists, and 11.2 rebounds per game this season.
But comments like Fox’s suggest Wembanyama is also growing into the vocal side of leadership. If that continues, it adds another dimension to the Frenchman’s impact. And if that development continues, the rest of the league will have something else to worry about.
