Donald Trump Confirms He Broke Up Kobe Bryant’s Fight in 1998

In a recent interview, pro boxer Jake Paul asked the president whether he had ever been in a real fight. Trump replied that he had never really been directly involved in a physical fight. But he did bring up a long-running rumor connected to the 1998 NBA All-Star Weekend in New York.

Trump said he was present during a tense moment between Bryant and former NBA player Jayson Williams and claimed that he ended up breaking up the confrontation.

“That was a long time ago. Yeah, well, I was breaking up a fight, which sometimes is more dangerous than being in a fight. But I like Kobe.”

“Kobe was having a hard time with somebody, and it worked out fine. But yeah, I broke it up; probably not a smart thing to do. Historically, it’s never good to break up fights,” Trump said during the interview.

The story has circulated for years in basketball circles. Sportswriter Jeff Pearlman, author of the book “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s,” once spoke about the incident on The Ryen Russillo Podcast.

“I’m not a Donald Trump fan, I guess, in one of the few things that I would say Donald Trump deserves credit for. He actually broke up. Donald Trump broke up a fight or got in the middle of a fight between Kobe Bryant and Jayson Williams,” Pearlman said during the podcast.

According to Pearlman, the moment took place in 1998 during All-Star Weekend at the Grand Hyatt hotel in New York. Trump had previously co-owned the property with the Hyatt Corporation before selling his stake in 1996. Bryant reportedly stepped into an elevator where Williams was already present. Also inside the elevator were Trump and former NBA enforcer Charles Oakley.

What started as a simple interaction quickly turned tense. Words were exchanged, and Williams became upset. From Williams’ point of view, Bryant, who was still a young rising star, did not show enough respect when greeting a veteran player. The disagreement escalated quickly, and Williams reportedly lunged at Bryant.

Before things could go any further, Trump stepped in and separated the two. According to the story told over the years, his intervention prevented the situation from escalating into a real fight.

Interestingly, Oakley later offered a slightly different perspective. In an interview with USA Today, he said he does not clearly remember being in the elevator during that exact incident. However, Oakley also said he had heard Williams tell the story before.

“He had told it to some people that I was around. Jayson, he liked to be a story. He’s a storyteller. I told him, ‘Jayson, I mean, you 55, 57. You probably told that story 50 times,'” Oakley said, per USA Today.

Trump has shown respect for Bryant on several occasions over the years. After Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant tragically died in a helicopter crash in 2020, Trump publicly mourned him and described the “Black Mamba” as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Not only that, but during a White House event celebrating African American History Month, he also honored the legacies of Kobe and Gianna.

By confirming this long-standing rumor now, Trump has once again made clear that Bryant was someone he genuinely respected.
