Clippers Face Losing 3 First-Round Picks, $30M Fine as Punishment for Kawhi Leonard Scandal: Frank Isola Reports

NBA insider Frank Isola reports the Clippers face 3 first-round picks and $30M+ fine for the Kawhi Leonard Aspiration scandal.

Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers are staring down the possibility of the most severe disciplinary action in NBA history. While the team has spent recent seasons trying to establish a championship culture at the Intuit Dome, a looming shadow from the past has reappeared.

The No-Show Allegation Facing Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers

In 2019, Leonard was embroiled in a scandal while in free agency after it was reported that he and his uncle, Dennis Robertson, made requests for impermissible perks, including part-ownership of the team, access to a private plane, a house, and guaranteed off-court endorsement money, as per The Athletic.

Though the Clippers didn’t grant any of the mentioned perks and were cleared, the NBA issued a warning that the case could be reopened if substantial information was collected. Fast forward to 2025, and Leonard and the Clippers have been reported for salary cap circumvention.

“We’re going to be bold. Bold means taking chances,” Steve Ballmer said after acquiring the Clippers for $2 billion in 2014. He added, “We’re going to be optimistic. We’re going to be hardcore. Nothing gets in our way. Boom! The hardcore Clippers. That’s us.”

Ballmer led the Clippers boldly, but how far did they go? The NBA punishment could cost the team first-round draft picks and create a massive financial hole.

NBA insider Frank Isola reported on SiriusXM NBA Radio, “I heard, now I have no idea if this is true, I heard it could be three first-round picks that they get hit with, and then there’s going to be a lot of money, millions upon millions, more than $30 million, I heard.”

The heart of the scandal involves a four-year, $28 million endorsement deal between Kawhi Leonard’s KL2 Aspire and Aspiration, a fintech company that recently filed for bankruptcy. Pablo Torre, through his podcast Torre Finds Out, reported in September 2025 that the deal was a “no-show” job used to circumvent the NBA salary cap rule while providing extra compensation to Leonard.

Torre presented numerous pieces of evidence he received from a whistleblower, including text messages, emails, bankruptcy filings, and a $50 million fund from Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. The NBA launched a formal investigation into this scandal.

When Kawhi Leonard was asked about the scandal during Clippers media day in September, he dismissed it as a conspiracy theory and clickbait. He told The Washington Post’s Ben Golliver, “I don’t read headlines or do conspiracy theories or anything like that, so. It’s about the season and what we’ve got ahead of us right now. The NBA is going to do their job. None of us did no wrongdoing. That’s it.”

Steve Ballmer denied any involvement, saying, “These were guys who committed fraud. Look, they conned me. They conned me. I made an investment in these guys thinking it was on the up-and-up, and they conned me at this stage.”

Leonard and the Clippers Could Face Franchise-Altering Penalties

The NBA has hired the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz to lead a formal investigation. If they find sufficient evidence of circumventing the salary cap, the punishment is expected to be franchise-altering.

The Clippers could face a loss of draft capital with multiple first-round picks, massive financial fines exceeding $30 million, and a potential contractual nullification for Leonard’s deal, making him an immediate free agent amidst his career’s best statistical season with an average of 28.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.0 steals while shooting 50.3% from the field, 38% from the three-point arc and 90.6% from the free throw line.

As the investigation reaches its conclusion, the Clippers are 33-32 in the Western Conference at eighth place. While they try to balance a deep playoff run, the threat of losing their offensive cornerstone looms over the franchise.
