Team USA remains supreme in the Olympics after winning the gold medal against France in 2024. The venue for the 2028 Olympics has been set for Los Angeles, California, United States, from July 14 to July 30, 2028.
Given Team USA’s undefeated record in gold medal games since the 2008 Olympics, basketball legend Michael Jordan set high expectations for the 2028 Team USA squad.
Michael Jordan Believes Team USA Won’t Lose in 2028 Olympics
Jordan is undoubtedly one of the greatest basketball players of all time. His contributions to the sport are what helped basketball become a global sensation. Not only is he an NBA legend, but he has also made an impactful appearance in the Olympics.
Back in 1984, Jordan was recruited by Team USA to compete in the Olympic basketball tournament. At the time, Jordan was still classified as an amateur college player. Despite being surrounded by professionals, MJ outperformed his teammates, averaging 17.1 points per game and leading the team to a gold medal victory.
Then, in 1992, Jordan teamed up with fellow NBA legends, forming the famous “Dream Team”, which resulted in another gold medal victory for Team USA.
Given the Americans’ success in Olympic basketball, Jordan recently said Team USA is the best in the world at the sport.
In a recent episode of NBC’s “MJ: Insights to Excellence”, Jordan shared his thoughts on the upcoming 2028 Olympics in LA. He set the bar for Team USA and guaranteed they won’t lose, especially given that they will have homecourt advantage then.
“I think basketball is so strong in the United States,” Jordan said. “I think there’s no way we should lose.”
While Jordan set high expectations for his home country, the basketball legend acknowledged how much the international teams have evolved in the sport. He understands that while Team USA will always be dominant in his eyes, other countries are now keeping up as well.
“(International teams) have evolved,” Jordan said. “It’s all huge. That’s very genuine. There’s no money involved; it’s pure passion and dedication to the country as well as to the game.”
