It is one of the most replayed 10 seconds in recent NBA memory. A beer, a handshake, and a confused look from Luka Dončić that the internet never forgot. Nearly two years later, the man at the center of that moment, Michael Finley, has finally told the whole story.

Michael Finley Finally Reveals Why He Took Away Luka Dončić’s Beer After Finals Berth
The incident took place on May 30, 2024, moments after the Dallas Mavericks clinched the Western Conference finals over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dončić had just been named series MVP, and the celebrations were in full swing inside the Target Center corridors.
The viral clip showed Mavericks executive Finley walking up to the franchise star and quietly lifting the beer can right out of his hand, leaving Dončić visibly puzzled. With no explanation ever offered publicly, the internet filled in the blanks. Soon, it became a narrative that worked against the organization, owing to the silence.
Speaking on “The K and C Masterpiece,” Finley, now serving as co-interim general manager after Nico Harrison’s firing, finally walked through exactly what happened that night.
“I leave the court. I see number 77 standing over there having a beer, and I say, ‘Congratulations, young fella, you definitely deserve that beer,'” Finley recalled. “I leave him. I go in the locker room. I celebrate with the rest of the team. We’re having a great time. Champagne is being popped. Pictures are being taken, and we’re having a jolly old time.”
It was on his way back out that the now-famous moment was set in motion, something not by Finley’s own initiative. “I come out of the locker room and our social media department is frozen,” he said. “They said, ‘We wanna take a picture of Luka and his dad.’ I said, ‘Well, take the picture.’ They said, ‘But Luka’s holding a beer.’ I said, ‘Well, go take the beer from him.’ They said, ‘What? We can’t do that.’ I said, ‘OK, I’ll do it.'”
Mavs co-interim general manager Michael Finley talked to @kandc1053 about the infamous video of him taking a beer away from Luka Dončić:

The reasoning was straightforward. All the Mavericks wanted was a clean, sponsor-friendly image of their star for official channels, and someone needed to step in. Finley volunteered. “When you watch the video, I go take the beer, I hug Luka again, and that’s why Luka looked like, ‘Man, what are you doing? We just talked about this, and you said it was cool.'”
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the drink was returned to Dončić as soon as he was out of public view, and the private celebrations carried on without interruption.
Had the Mavericks offered even a brief explanation at the time, the clip would likely have been forgotten within days. Instead, their silence let the story breathe and grow. When Dallas traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025, the video resurfaced immediately.
Fans pointed to it as “Exhibit A” in the case that the organization had never truly respected its franchise cornerstone, and it became one of the most referenced moments in the entire trade saga.
The irony, as Stein later reported, is that Finley was actually among those within the Mavericks who opposed the trade most vocally when it was first proposed. Far from being an antagonist in the Dončić story, he was one of the few inside the building who wanted him to stay.
Finley’s public clarification appears to be part of a broader reset for a franchise still navigating the fallout of that decision. Dallas has since moved forward with rookie Cooper Flagg as the centerpiece of its rebuild, while Dončić continues to thrive in Los Angeles. He’s averaging 32.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.6 assists this season.
