NBA world reacts as Celtics rookie Hugo Gonzalez steals spotlight in Giannis Antetokounmpo return with historic 18-16 night.

On Monday, March 2, the Boston Celtics traveled to Fiserv Forum for their matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Celtics won the game 108-81.

Rookie Hugo Gonzalez stepped up big time, dropping a career high 18 points and 16 rebounds in 35 minutes. The NBA world showered the Celtics’ rookie with high praise for his record-breaking performance

Hugo Gonzalez Garner Massive Praise For His Impressive Statline During Celtics vs. Bucks Game

Monday’s Celtics vs. Bucks game was supposed to be all about Greek sensation Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 10-time All-Star returned to action after about a five-week absence following his left calf injury, having missed 15 straight games.

But it was Celtics rookie Gonzalez who stole all the spotlight with his jaw-dropping stat line. With his career-best 18/16/3 outing, he became just the second Celtics rookie after Larry Bird to post those numbers in a game. His double-double punch helped Boston cruise to a 27-point victory.

Here’s how the NBA world reacted to Gonzalez’s breakout performance.

Hoop Central called attention to Gonzalez’s huge all-around night on X, noting that he stuffed the box score with 18 points and 16 rebounds while also making an impact defensively (three steals and two blocks). He added one assist, shot 7-for-15 from the field, logged 35 minutes, and finished with a +27 plus/minus.

The NBA’s official X account celebrated the rookie’s standout performance, putting it into a broader context by mentioning his teammate Neemias Queta’s own breakout game the night before.

StatMuse chimed in to show just how rare Gonzalez’s performance against Milwaukee actually was. By racking up 18 points, 16 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and setting three career highs in the process, the young forward joined some incredibly elite company, becoming the only Celtics rookie since Larry Bird to hit those numbers in a single game.

Spotrac contributor Keith Smith offered long-term praise:

“Hugo Gonzalez is going to have a long career as a rotation wing, just because he hustles and defends. And he’s getting better by the game with all the skill stuff too. The sky really is the limit for this kid.”

SB Nation’s Noa Dalzell echoed that sentiment, highlighting how the youngster braced shoulders with the Greek Freak himself:

New York Times writer Sopan Deb took a forward-looking perspective on Gonzalez’s standout game, praising the young Celtics player as a crucial piece of the franchise’s foundation. Deb highlighted how Gonzalez’s dominant rebounding and shot-blocking skills this week seem to have firmly cemented his role as Boston’s “center of the future.”

Emmy Award-winning journalist Jack Aylmer offered a real-time perspective on Gonzalez’s dominance, noting that the rookie had already secured a double-double (15 points and 12 rebounds) by the third quarter. He also pointed out how efficiently Gonzalez was shooting, going 6-for-12 overall and 2-for-5 from deep, while stuffing the stat sheet with two blocks, three steals, and even drawing a pivotal offensive foul against Antetokounmpo.

The Celtics selected Gonzalez with the 28th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Spanish wing out of Real Madrid is averaging 4.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 56 games this season, starting just two prior to the Bucks matchup.

He was in the starting lineup against Milwaukee and delivered the best performance of his young career.

The win was Boston’s 41st of the season and their third straight, keeping them firmly in second place in the Eastern Conference despite missing the leading scorer, Jaylen Brown, due to illness.

As for Antetokounmpo, he finished with 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting in his return, but couldn’t prevent the Bucks’ third straight loss. The night, meanwhile, belonged to the Celtics rookie, who looked completely unbothered by the spotlight.
