Hornets HC Charles Lee Reveals What Sparked His Heated Ejection in ‘Physical’ Pistons Showdown

Hornets coach Charles Lee addressed his emotional ejection after a heated, physical showdown with the Pistons that featured fights and multiple ejections.

The Charlotte Hornets’ clash against the Detroit Pistons on Monday night spiraled into one of the most chaotic games of the season. It featured a third-quarter brawl, multiple ejections, and a fiery fourth-quarter incident that engulfed Hornets’ head coach Charles Lee in the loop.

While the Pistons did manage to hold on for a 110-104 win at the Spectrum Center, the game was eclipsed by the escalating tensions and physicality.

Charles Lee Explains Fourth-Quarter Outburst

Lee was ejected midway through the fourth quarter after an offensive foul was called on Grant Williams during a collision with Pistons center Paul Reed near the top of the key. Williams did not have the ball on the play, and the call immediately drew an animated reaction from the Hornets’ bench.

Lee began shouting at officials and had to be restrained by Williams, Brandon Miller, and LaMelo Ball before referees issued the ejection. Speaking after the game, Lee acknowledged his reaction and explained what set him off.

“I take ownership of it. I thought it was a very physical game,” Lee said. “Grant’s walking down in pain and barely touched somebody, and the guy fell over, and that’s what we were gonna call a foul. Again, they have a hard job to have to make these calls, but I don’t think that that was like the consistency of what had been called the rest of the game.”

Lee added that he needs to show better emotional control in those moments moving forward.

Physical Night Ends Hornets’ Win Streak

The intensity of the night escalated earlier in the third quarter when a foul by Hornets center Moussa Diabate on Pistons big man Jalen Duren sparked a physical confrontation. The two went forehead-to-forehead before Duren shoved Diabate, triggering a melee that quickly spread across the court. Miles Bridges and Isaiah Stewart joined the fray, with Stewart sprinting off the bench as punches were thrown.

After a lengthy delay, officials ejected Diabate and Bridges for Charlotte, along with Duren and Stewart for Detroit. Crew chief John Goble later confirmed the players were tossed for “engaging in fighting activity during the dead ball.”

Despite the chaos, Detroit maintained control down the stretch. Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 33 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Duncan Robinson added 18. The loss snapped Charlotte’s nine-game winning streak, though Brandon Miller paced the Hornets with 24 points, followed by Kon Knueppel’s 20 and Ball’s 20-point effort.

Knueppel also spoke after the game about Lee’s willingness to stand up for his players amid the adversity. When asked about seeing his head coach fight for the team, he appreciated the energy Lee brought to the sideline. “You know, in college, they are two-point technicals. In the NBA, that’s only one free throw,” Knueppel said. “But it was good to see Lee had our back there. I thought he really brought the juice tonight. Was pumped up for this game… it’s good to see that from a coach.”

The league is now expected to review the on-court altercation and take possible further actions. Lee, on the other hand, made it clear that his ejection stemmed from frustration with how the game was officiated, not the earlier fight. For him, it was a night that he felt crossed the line physically.
