The Atlanta Hawks recently sent four-time All-Star Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Additionally, the Wizards also made a deal with the Dallas Mavericks for Anthony Davis, who is set to sit out the rest of the year.
Young, who suffered from a right MCL sprain earlier in the season, has been experiencing residual pain from the injury. Additionally, the former Hawks’ star has been sidelined since Dec. 27 with a right quad contusion.
Latest Injury Update on Wizards Star Trae Young
According to recent reports, Young will not make his debut for the Washington Wizards until after the NBA All-Star break. Despite signing with the Wizards at the start of January, head coach Brian Keefe had always planned to sideline him until after the All-Star break.
“Our priority for him is his health. That’s No. 1. Obviously, we’re going to trust the process with our medical and performance teams. The only thing I have is that we are going to reevaluate him after the break.” O’Keefe stated earlier last month.
Following his MCL sprain earlier in the season, Trae Young is currently on track for the timeline Keefe set out for him. According to a recent update from Wizards’ GM Will Dawkings, Young is currently slowly getting back on the court and participating in non-contact basketball activities.
This season, having played only 10 games for the Hawks, the four-time All-Star has averaged 19.3 points and 8.9 assists. During his time in Atlanta, Young finished as the Hawks’ all-time leader in 3-pointers (1,295) and assists (4,837).

However, these reports are no guarantee that Young will play this season. Currently, the only known timeline is that the Wizards are planning to evaluate him after the All-Star break. The team recently shut down Davis for the season after acquiring him from Dallas.
“I would be surprised if he (Trae Young) plays much, if at all, the remainder of this season.” The Athletic’s Josh Robbins reported following the trade for Young. The likelihood of the Wizards shutting down Young alongside Davis to prepare for next season may be high.
Following the reveal that the Wizards are sitting Davis to keep him as healthy as possible for the 2026-27 season, they may write this season off and make a similar move for Trae Young. However, we will not hear anything until after the All-Star break.
“When … I’m able to be right and get on the court. I show that I can bring the best out of this team and these young guys that I’m around, and hopefully make an All-Star or two out of some of these other guys.” Young shared his intent upon signing.
Wizards’ GM Will Dawkins also mentioned that Young has a choice to make on whether he would be playing after the All-Star break.
Young currently has a $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season. Recent reports from the Washington GM state that Wizards’ officials and Young’s agent have not had significant discussions about a new contract or a contract extension as of January.
