Kyrie Irving Makes Feelings Clear on Future in Dallas After Mavericks’ Surprise Anthony Davis Trade

Kyrie Irving and his camp weigh in on the veteran guard's future with the Mavericks after his co-star Anthony Davis' stunning trade-deadline exit.

As Kyrie Irving continues to work his way back from a torn left ACL, the Dallas Mavericks star’s surroundings underwent a massive overhaul on Wednesday. His co-star, Anthony Davis, was unexpectedly shipped to the Washington Wizards in an eight-player blockbuster deal, casting doubt on Irving’s future in Dallas.

However, according to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Mavericks fans have nothing to worry about regarding Irving possibly seeking greener pastures ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.

Kyrie Irving Remains ‘Committed to Dallas’ As Mavericks Enter Post-Anthony Davis Era

After the Mavericks’ shocking decision to flip their franchise cornerstone, Luka Dončić, to the Los Angeles Lakers at last year’s deadline for a Davis-headlined return, Irving and the big man were expected to form a lethal inside-out duo.

Instead, injuries limited Irving to just one outing alongside the 10-time All-Star leading up to Wednesday’s shake-up, with Davis ending his Dallas tenure with just 29 total appearances.

The Mavericks’ latest trade haul features an assortment of salary filler, role players, and draft capital, signaling a focus toward the future as they build around rookie phenom Cooper Flagg. Given Irving’s age (soon-to-be 34) and extensive injury history, many assumed that he could be the next out the door.

However, the 2016 NBA champion and his camp reportedly have a far different outlook on his situation.

“I talked to his agent, Shetellia Irving, just a second ago. She said that Kyrie is just processing the changes, and he’s still committed to Dallas,” Spears said on Wednesday’s edition of “NBA Today.” “A source close to the Mavs told me that they believe Kyrie is still committed to the Mavericks as well.”

The insider added that there is still time for Irving to switch up his stance, though such a scenario is unlikely at this point.

“Obviously, there’s 24 hours to go, a lot could happen, but Kyrie’s working out, we’ll see if he plays [this season] … but in terms of his situation with Dallas, he hasn’t asked out,” Spears said.

This update aligns with a Wednesday report from DallasHoopsJournal.com’s Grant Afseth regarding the organization’s plans for the veteran.

“Internally, the Mavericks continue to see strong long-term potential in pairing Kyrie Irving with Cooper Flagg once Irving returns to the court,” Afseth wrote.

As such, all signs point toward Irving making his eventual return alongside the dynamic 2025 No. 1 pick and providing the struggling Mavericks (19-31) with a much-needed proven ball handler.

Across 50 contests before tearing his ACL last season, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.9 3-pointers per game, shooting 47.3%.
