Leading up to Thursday’s trade deadline, Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the top storyline in the NBA. After publicly brushing off trade speculation for months, the Milwaukee Bucks have now begun entertaining trade offers for their homegrown superstar. Seeing that he is still a top player in the league, countless teams have expressed interest in Antetokounmpo.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as the apparent frontrunner, aggressively pursuing Antetokounmpo amid reports that he is intrigued by the idea of teaming up with Anthony Edwards. But despite the growing noise and mounting speculation, Antetokounmpo’s loyalty to Milwaukee appears far from gone.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Preferred Destination Still Remains Milwaukee
Antetokounmpo was drafted by the Bucks in 2013 and has delivered sustained success to the franchise, highlighted by the 2021 NBA championship. However, Milwaukee’s recent struggles and its inability to consistently surround the two-time MVP with a championship-level supporting cast have fueled growing frustration and, eventually, trade speculation.
That tension reached a boiling point this season as the Bucks slipped to 12th in the Eastern Conference. While a trade now appears increasingly plausible, Antetokounmpo has made it clear that his deepest desire remains finishing his career in Milwaukee.
“If you ask me what do I really want, deep down in my heart? I want to be a Milwaukee Buck until I retire and win a championship here. End of sentence,” Antetokounmpo said in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
However, Antetokounmpo also acknowledged the business reality of the situation and his desire to win championships.
“If that is not possible to happen, and if then you realize maybe that’s not the case and maybe they’re looking elsewhere and that’s not what they’re trying to do, then automatically you have to be in the plans of what they’re trying to do or weigh the other options. It’s normal,” he added.
Antetokounmpo’s comments align with recent insider reporting. Jake Fischer has noted that while Antetokounmpo is mindful of protecting his legacy, he is equally driven to continue adding to an already remarkable résumé.
“He is very much focused on the story and the arc of his professional career,” Fischer said of Giannis. “He’s cared about the narrative structure and the characterization of his next situation…
“You’re not gonna have a five-year, six-year window competing for championships alongside Steph in Golden State like you theoretically would next to Anthony Edwards in Minnesota. Next to Jalen Brunson in New York, next to Bam Adebayo in Miami.”
Among those options, Minnesota arguably presents the clearest path. Pairing Antetokounmpo with Edwards could provide the missing piece for a Timberwolves team that has reached back-to-back conference finals but fallen short of the ultimate goal. Delivering the franchise its first championship would only further cement Antetokounmpo’s place among the NBA’s all-time greats.
Rapidly approaching the final 24 hours before the deadline, all eyes will be glued on Giannis and the Bucks to see if his Milwaukee tenure is going to end.
