James Harden Connected to Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Raptors, Pelicans After Shocking Trade ‘Request’

On Monday evening, ESPN’s Shams Charania dropped a bombshell report on Harden’s interest in finding a new home.

“The Los Angeles Clippers and 11-time All-Star James Harden are working through whether the sides can find a deal by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, sources tell ESPN. Both sides are aligned in conversations together and with interested teams,” Charania wrote.

Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix also revealed that the Clippers have “had advanced discussions on a deal that would send James Harden to Cleveland in exchange for Darius Garland.”

While the rumored blockbuster floor general swap sent shockwaves across the NBA world, it didn’t take long for more possible trade destinations to emerge for the 2018 MVP.

According to Clippers insider Tomer Azarly, in addition to Cleveland, “the Minnesota Timberwolves have also had trade discussions with the Clippers around James Harden.”

Meanwhile, Azarly noted that “the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Pelicans have also inquired on potentially trading for James Harden, but sources say Harden has no interest in joining either franchise via trade.”

The stunning development comes amid LA’s improbable midseason resurgence. Since enduring a disastrous 6-21 start, the veteran squad has gone 17-5 to climb to ninth in the Western Conference (23-26).

Per Azarly, “Harden and the Clippers have been in active trade talks for multiple weeks.” However, “the team hasn’t wanted to trade Harden, especially with the team’s recent stretch of success.”

The LA insider added that “this request from Harden came as a surprise to the organization, given how they have turned their season around.”

Regardless, according to Charania, Harden is prioritizing his “future” amid his age-36 campaign, and is looking for his best “path toward competing for a championship.”

Despite his extensive list of accolades, the three-time NBA scoring champion has yet to capture his elusive first title.

Harden, who is in Year 1 of his two-year, $81,500,000 contract, could stand to improve his title chances by joining an upper-echelon team like the Timberwolves (31-20) or Cavaliers (30-21).

Through 44 appearances this season, Harden is averaging 25.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 8.1 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.1 3-pointers per game on 41.9% shooting, maintaining All-Star-caliber production in Year 17.
