LeBron James Shows Appreciation for Knicks Fans After Madison Square Garden Showdown: ‘I Love New York’

LeBron James showed deep appreciation for Knicks fans and the energy of Madison Square Garden after the Lakers’ 112-100 loss in New York.

The Los Angeles Lakers wrapped up their seventh straight road game Sunday night against the New York Knicks, and even after 23 seasons in the NBA, LeBron James admitted that playing at Madison Square Garden still carries a special meaning. The four-time NBA champion once again embraced the moment on one of basketball’s most iconic stages.

More than the arena itself, it was the reception from the New York crowd that stood out to James. Despite the Lakers coming up short, he took time afterward to express his appreciation for Knicks fans and the energy they brought.

Fresh off his NBA record-extending 22nd All-Star selection, James finished with 22 points, five rebounds, and six assists in the Lakers’ 112–100 loss to the Knicks. Speaking in the locker room afterward, James made it clear that the result didn’t diminish his appreciation for the crowd, praising both the fans and New York’s rich sports culture.

“I’ve always loved these fans here, love New York,” he said. “Always respect, they got a great knowledge of the game of basketball and sports in general. They know what sports is all about. They know when they see something pretty cool. I was giving my respect back.”

James has frequently been linked to New York throughout his career, though a move never materialized and appears unlikely at this stage.

On the court, Luka Dončić once again led the Lakers with a standout performance, recording 30 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists, and five 3-pointers. However, only two other Lakers reached double figures, and the Knicks’ balanced effort ultimately proved too much.

The Lakers dropped to 29-19 and sit sixth in the Western Conference, far from ideal for a team that entered the season with championship aspirations. James pointed to injuries as a key factor, highlighting Austin Reaves’ 19-game absence due to a left calf strain, which has stalled what had been a career year for the guard.

“Like I said, it’s been tough all season as far as dealing with injuries, guys in and guys out,” James shared. “Unfortunately, our All-Star two guard has been out for a minute, and that’s a big piece for our team. So, it’s kind of hard to see what we can really, truly be.”

For all the uncertainty surrounding the Lakers’ season, moments like Sunday night at Madison Square Garden still carry weight. Even in defeat, James showed why his presence continues to resonate across the league, especially in basketball’s most storied arenas.

As Los Angeles searches for consistency and health down the stretch, one thing remains unchanged that wherever he plays, the 41-year-old James still commands respect, and few places reflect that quite like New York.
