Victor Wembanyama is a hurricane that everyone in the NBA knows is just getting started. He’s already playing at an MVP level (the only reason he’s not in the conversation is that he’s missed too many games), and only three years in, he’s already beating all-timers in categories they’re best at.

How Has Victor Wembanyama Already Outshined NBA Legends?
The X account Real App revealed that, over 150 career games, Wembanyama has more points than Kevin Durant, more rebounds than Charles Barkley, more assists than Nikola Jokić, more steals than Kobe Bryant, more blocks than Hakeem Olajuwon, and more three-point shots than Stephen Curry in that same timespan.

It’s true that more context is needed (Stephen Curry didn’t blossom until after his rookie contract ended, in part because of his recurring ankle issues), but it’s stats like these that show Wembanyama has met, if not exceeded, the hype.
It’s funny because many may question why Wembanyama would be compared to someone like Bryant, who is better known for his scoring. However, many forget that Bryant was one of the NBA’s best defensive guards of his era, earning 12 NBA All-Defense selections from 2000 to 2012. More than that, nine of those were first-team.
Wembanyama being a Kobe-esque defender is huge for the San Antonio Spurs. His showing that he is both the jack-of-all-trades and the master-of-all-trades indicates that the Spurs’ future is in good hands with him.
The next step is proving that he can keep this going in the postseason. As long as Wembanyama stays healthy, they are in a prime position to go on a legitimate playoff run. At 32-15, the Spurs are No. 2 in the Western Conference. The Oklahoma City Thunder have been in a rut since the Spurs beat them in the NBA Cup Semifinals, and now, they’re only five-and-a-half games behind them in the standings.
The one sad aspect in all of this is how his impressive play will always compare to the Spurs legend that came before him – Tim Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, David Robinson, George Gervin, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili – so there will be a bigger spotlight on him. Duncan won a title in his second season in the league.
Wembanyama didn’t do that, but it might be too long before he brings San Antonio its first NBA title as a player and the franchise’s first since 2014.
