Jonathan Kuminga Injury Update: Latest on the Warriors Forward After Exiting Game vs. Mavericks

Latest on Jonathan Kuminga's status after the Golden State Warriors forward's early exit against the Dallas Mavericks.

The Golden State Warriors’ injury woes continued during Thursday’s primetime road matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, as Jonathan Kuminga exited in the first half after an awkward landing.

The setback comes just as the disgruntled 23-year-old forward had worked his way back into coach Steve Kerr’s rotation and was attempting to build up his trade value.

What’s the Latest on Jonathan Kuminga’s Status?

With Golden State leading 43-39 with 4:28 remaining in the second quarter, Kuminga appeared to tweak his left ankle and knee while getting fouled on a drive to the basket.

The fifth-year player promptly took the seat of a young fan underneath the rim before getting up and hitting both free throws. He then temporarily attempted to remain in the game but was ultimately forced to exit, limping his way to the locker room.

According to Warriors insider Anthony Slater, Kuminga sustained an “ankle twist and minor knee hyperextension,” cutting his evening short after a hot start.

Kuminga finished with 10 points, one rebound, two assists, and two steals on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting overall and 4-for-4 shooting at the free-throw line in just nine minutes off the bench. This followed his 20-point performance in Tuesday’s 145-127 home loss to the Toronto Raptors, his first appearance since Dec. 18 after sitting out 16 straight contests.

The 2021 No. 7 pick was thrust back into the rotation in the wake of his star teammate Jimmy Butler III suffering a season-ending torn right ACL in Monday’s 135-112 home win over the Miami Heat.

Kuminga, who “demanded” a trade just last week, has tallied a total of 30 points in 30 minutes since his return to action, accumulating a plus-minus of plus-18.

Fortunately for Golden State, his setback “isn’t believed to be serious.”

Kuminga’s next chance to suit up comes during Saturday’s road clash against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the first of two consecutive matchups against the upper-echelon Western Conference squad.

If Kuminga remains out, his absence would likely free up additional playing time for Moses Moody, Will Richard, and Gui Santos. Additionally, his injury could hurt his prospects of finding a new NBA home, with the Feb. 5 trade deadline just a couple of weeks away.

The Warriors (25-20) entered Thursday 9-10 with Kuminga in the lineup and 16-10 without him.
