76ers Veteran Kyle Lowry Makes Feelings Clear on Pursuing an NBA Coaching Career Post-Retirement

Kyle Lowry will retire after this season, and when asked about the prospect of coaching, he made it abundantly clear how he feels about it.

Kyle Lowry is about to hang it up soon. The legendary NBA point guard is expected to retire when the season is over. During the Philadelphia 76ers’ win over the Toronto Raptors in Toronto, Nick Nurse courteously inserted Lowry into the game so he could get a standing ovation from the fans.

Like all NBA stars who retire, many wonder what their plans are afterward. Lowry was asked about it last night, and he did not mince words.

How Does Kyle Lowry Feel About Pursuing a Career in Coaching?

During his postgame press conference on January 12, The Athletic’s Esfandiar Baraheni asked if Lowry wants to coach at some point. Lowry answered pretty bluntly. “Nope,” Lowry said, causing an uproar of laughter. “Simple answer for that.”

The Raptors legend then further elaborated on why he’s won’t go down that path. “Because I know I’d probably have to run into someone like me,” Lowry said, which was again met with a few laughs.

“I know I’m not easy to coach… The coaching thing, I tip my hat to these coaches. They work hard, and I know how much time they put in. So, for me personally, I just know you don’t want to run into a guy like myself. It would be fun to do it, but I just want time to go home and at that point, I’m not coaching. I want to hang out with my kids.”

Over the course of his NBA career, Lowry has earned nearly $300 million, so it’s safe to say that he has amassed enough to secure his financial future. As we’ve seen, some former NBA players earn that much (and even more) and still desire to work in the NBA in some capacity, whether it’s in coaching or the front office.

Lowry very clearly doesn’t want to do that, and he had a perfectly rational explanation for why. One thing he can do upon retiring is create his own podcast to discuss the NBA, as many former and current players do. Due to their status, they garner attention and earn some money from it.

It’s also very possible that Lowry wants the quiet life when this is all over. He doesn’t owe anyone anything, and if his priority is spending time with his kids, he’s more than entitled to live that life.
