On Feb. 2, 2025, the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers stunned the NBA by trading Luka Dončić and Anthony Davis in a deal no one saw coming. There had been no prior trade talks, and Dončić was widely viewed as Dallas’ long-term franchise cornerstone, expected to follow in Dirk Nowitzki’s footsteps.
Instead, former Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison chose to move Dončić to acquire Davis. NBA agent Rich Paul recently addressed the blockbuster on his podcast, offering insight into what may have driven Harrison’s decision.
Nico Harrison Envisioned More Rings With Anthony Davis Compared to Luka Dončić
Davis and Dončić are two of the best players in the league today. However, one major difference between the two is that AD is more well-rounded, given his ability to efficiently score on the offensive end while providing a solid defensive presence.
But another major difference between the two stars, which Harrison might’ve failed to factor in, was that Davis is as brittle as glass. Over the years, AD has become notorious for consistently popping up on the injury list. This led to Harrison’s demise.
The Lakers have clearly won the trade, with Luka now taking over and leading his new team to a potential championship run this season. Meanwhile, Davis is once again on the injury list with a torn ligament in his left hand and could be out for at least six weeks.
Given the circumstances, Harrison was ultimately fired from his position as the Mavericks’ general manager. NBA agent Paul shed some light on why Harrison believed in the concept of Davis being a key figure in Dallas.
“I think Nico’s thought process was, ‘I got the points in either one of these guys (Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis)’,” Paul said. “But in AD, I have the defensive prowess as well, and ultimately that wins championships. He just never had a chance to see it all play out together. That first game (Irving and Davis playing together), it looked incredible.”

Unfortunately for the Mavericks, they’re now struggling to climb up the Western Conference standings. They’re currently in 13th place with a 14-25 record. Dallas’ front office is now finding ways to trade Davis for better assets in hopes of still salvaging what’s left of their season.
