NBA Insider Reveals Nets’ Asking Price For Michael Porter Jr. Amid Escalating Trade Rumors

Michael Porter Jr.’s breakout season has sparked trade rumors, but the Nets are reportedly demanding significant return in any potential deal.

The Denver Nuggets traded Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets last summer for Cam Johnson. Denver had to attach a valuable draft asset to get off of Porter’s five-year, $179.3 million deal, meaning he had negative trade value.

That perception has shifted dramatically in Brooklyn. Porter’s strong play with the Nets has revitalized his career and placed him squarely in the middle of trade discussions ahead of the February 5 deadline. With his value on the rise, the Nets are now reportedly seeking a significant return from any team interested in acquiring him.

Nets Eye Major Return for Michael Porter Jr.

NBA insider Ramona Shelburne recently reported that many teams are targeting Porter ahead of the trade deadline. While he did not identify specific teams, franchises seeking a postseason push, including the Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, and Cleveland Cavaliers, could benefit from his breakout and improved playmaking.

However, the Nets won’t be giving up easily on him, and according to NBA insider Brett Siegel, they are looking at an unprotected first-round pick at minimum.

“Brooklyn won’t begin to consider any trade packages for Porter, or Nic Claxton for that matter, without the inclusion of a true unprotected first-round pick, among other assets,” he reported.

That price is largely justified. Coming into the 2025-26 season, Porter knew he was coming to a Nets team that needed an offensive boost. After Cam Thomas did not play from November 7 to December 27 due to a hamstring injury, Porter became an even heavier usage first scoring option. He did not disappoint and has continued his offensive explosion throughout the campaign.

He averages a career-high 26.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists this season. Oftentimes, players adjusting to a heavier offensive load see their efficiency numbers decrease. However, Porter’s percentages remain close to his numbers in Denver, and in some cases, he even increased his efficiency. The 14th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft shoots 41.1% on a career-best 9.4 attempts from beyond the arc.

Porter easily rises for a quality look over smaller defenders. His 6’10” frame with a lightning-fast jumpshot and high release point produces a lethal combination. Opposing teams want him to put the ball on the floor because he is turnover-prone. However, taking away Porter’s lethal catch-and-shoot game is much easier said than done.

With Brooklyn struggling at 11–23 and sitting 13th in the Eastern Conference, trade rumors are only intensifying. While the team may still be willing to move Porter, a package that includes an unprotected first-round pick could finally push a deal across the finish line.
