Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Rumors: Exec Says Bucks Star Could Have ‘Maximum Leverage,’ Under One Condition

NBA insiders say Giannis Antetokounmpo could gain “maximum leverage” in trade talks, but only if he waits to ask out as per one NBA insider.

Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors are once again bubbling to the surface. This time, league insiders believe the Milwaukee Bucks superstar could hold unprecedented control over his future, but only under one specific condition. While speculation around the Greek Freak leaving Milwaukee has followed him for years, a recent Bucks skid has reignited the conversation in a major way.

Waiting Till Summer Could Give Giannis Antetokounmpo Maximum Leverage Over Trade

Despite years of rumors, Antetokounmpo has consistently reiterated his commitment to Milwaukee. Even after the Bucks’ disappointing early playoff exit in 2025, the franchise acted swiftly, waiving Damian Lillard and acquiring Myles Turner, to convince their two-time MVP to stay put.

However, Milwaukee’s struggles this season have reopened the door to speculation. According to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps, one Eastern Conference scout laid out the key factor that could swing everything in Antetokounmpo’s favor:

“If he waits until the summer,” the scout said, “he’ll have maximum leverage on what his future will be.”

The scout might be pointing to Antetokounmpo’s contract situation. The 6’11” big man signed a three-year, $175.3 million contract with the Bucks, fully guaranteed, but after this season, he has just one guaranteed year left, plus a player option for 2027–28 that he can decline to enter free agency in 2027.

If Antetokounmpo waits until the summer to request a move, any team trading for him would essentially be acquiring an almost-expiring superstar. That could drastically reduce the number of teams willing to empty their war chest, unless Antetokounmpo signals he’s willing to re-sign.

In that scenario, Antetokounmpo would effectively be able to choose his destination, along with his preferred roster, coach, market, and co-star. Besides, during the Summer, more teams have greater trade flexibility. Additionally, postseason results provide clearer contender hierarchies, allowing teams to plan without midseason disruptions.

Antetokounmpo Trade Still Feels Unlikely for Now

Despite the noise, there’s currently no strong indication that either Antetokounmpo or the Bucks are preparing for a split. Antetokounmpo’s cautious approach could be due to his desire to see how Milwaukee responds before forcing any decision.

Even in a down year, his importance to the franchise is undeniable. He has also missed 14 games due to calf and groin strains. The Bucks are 15–20 overall, but a telling 3–11 without the Greek Freak, exposing Milwaukee’s reliance on him.

When he’s on the floor, the impact is immediate. On Friday against the Charlotte Hornets, Antetokounmpo once again reminded everyone why he’s central to the Bucks’ identity – throwing down a game-winning alley-oop from Kevin Porter Jr. in the final seconds to seal a 122–121 victory.

In the 21 games he has played so far, the 2021 NBA champion is averaging 29 points, 10 rebounds, 5.7 assists, with 63.7% field goal efficiency.

For now, Antetokounmpo remains the heart of Milwaukee’s hopes for its third NBA title. But if the Bucks fail to turn things around, the summer could be the moment where Antetokounmpo quietly gains the strongest leverage of his career and the NBA’s biggest domino starts to wobble.
