NBA Analyst Urges Lakers To ‘Punt the Season’ and Focus on Building Around Luka Dončić

An NBA analyst urges the Lakers to punt the season and shift focus toward building a stronger future around Luka Dončić.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ recent 106-128 loss to the Detroit Pistons has intensified concerns. That defeat dropped Los Angeles to 20–11 through 31 games, placing them fifth in the Western Conference. While that record may appear respectable on the surface, a closer look reveals troubling trends. Now, an NBA analyst has ignited debate by suggesting the Lakers should take a drastic but calculated approach to their current season.

NBA Analyst Says Lakers’ Future Should Revolve Around Luka Dončić

With the Lakers hovering around the middle of the Western Conference standings and struggling for consistency, NBA analyst Sam Quinn believes the franchise’s most brilliant move is to stop chasing short-term wins and instead prepare for a more sustainable future centered around Luka Dončić.

The Lakers’ recent struggles have exposed holes in their games, as they have gone just 4–6 over their last ten games and have been inconsistent, even at home, where they hold an 8–6 record. For a franchise with championship expectations, those numbers signal a team stuck between contention and transition.

The Lakers’ recent performances have been a hot topic of discussion, with one account, Lakers Lead, posting on X, asking for a solution. Responding to the post, Quinn emphasized the importance of building the roster to complement Dončić, suggesting that the Lakers should, for now, step away from desperation for wins.

He explained that the Lakers could enter the offseason with approximately $55 million in cap space, and combined with three first-round draft picks, they should invest in defense and build a team around Dončić.

“Punt the season. Go into the offseason with $55 million in cap space. Use it for defense and athleticism. Assess the trade market from there. You have three first-round picks. Maybe you package them for a star. Maybe you split them for depth. But focus on covering Luka’s flaws.” Quinn wrote on X.

The data support the urgency behind that thinking. Dončić currently leads the NBA in scoring at 33.5 points per game while also contributing 8.7 assists and 8.2 rebounds. His offensive workload is enormous, and without the proper defensive infrastructure, that burden becomes unsustainable over the course of a season. Building a roster that balances his strengths instead of overextending them could redefine the Lakers’ trajectory.

Quinn also floated multiple strategic options for the Lakers’ draft assets. Packaging picks for a proven star is one route, while splitting them to add depth and versatility is another.

Next up for the Lakers is a home game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.
