Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić is sidelined after suffering a frightening knee injury during a road matchup against the Miami Heat. But his absence has unexpectedly ignited a fresh debate around his style of play. While concern remains over the three-time MVP’s health, former NBA champion Nick Young has shifted attention toward Jokić’s approach to drawing fouls which is a topic rarely associated with the Serbian center.

Nick Young Questions Nikola Jokić’s Foul-Drawing Style
On Tuesday, the conversation took an unexpected turn. Former guard, Young shared his thoughts on Jokić’s playstyle during an episode of Gil’s Arena. Young, also known as “Swaggy P,” claimed that Jokić flops just as much as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Dončić but avoids the same level of criticism.
“You can’t touch Joker. As much as we talk about Shai and all that flopping, Joker flails and throws his arms more than anybody in the league,” Young said. “He flails and they give him everything… He gets everything he wants. We don’t talk about that. We talk about everything else. We talk about SGA, Luka, they all do the same thing, them three. I never hear nobody say anything bad about Joker.”
Young’s comments immediately stirred debate, especially with Gilgeous-Alexander often labeled a foul hunter. While SGA has drawn heavy criticism from fans, Young believes Jokić benefits from similar calls without the same backlash.
Before leaving the Heat game, Jokić had 21 points, five rebounds and eight assists on 9-of-14 shooting in just 19 minutes. Despite missing the entire second half, he still finished as Denver’s leading scorer.
Bam Adebayo’s Praise for Jokic Adds Another Side to the Debate
Young’s take directly clashes with comments made by Heat center Bam Adebayo, who recently praised Jokić’s approach to the game.
“It’s always fun playing against [Jokic],” Adebayo said. “You see how he makes his teammates better, you see the greatness. One thing I like about it is its competition at the end of the day. He’s one of those guys who don’t really flop, and I truly respect that. But it’s respect at the end of the day. Obviously, you hate to see guys go out. You’ve got to figure out how you can keep your team’s foot on the gas.”
That praise carries weight. Adebayo is a five-time All-Defensive team center and has faced Jokić 18 times in his career. His words suggest that while Jokić draws fouls, he does not actively hunt for them.
The numbers add more context. Gilgeous-Alexander has attempted 291 free throws this season, converting 88.3%. Jokić has taken 238 free throws and made 85.3%. Both draw contact, but their styles look very different on the court.
For now, Denver’s focus remains on Jokić’s health. As per the latest injury report, The 6-11 big man has narrowly avoided any serious knee injury. The three-time MVP is averaging 29.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 11.0 assists while shooting 60.5% from the field. The Nuggets sit 22-10, third in the West, and cannot afford a long absence.
