The Sacramento Kings are going through a very difficult season. After entering the year with playoff hopes, the Kings currently hold a (6–21) record and sit 13th in the Western Conference, just above the Los Angeles Clippers.
With losses piling up, questions have started to arise about the team’s future direction. During these tough times, reports have surfaced that suggest that an Eastern Conference team could be keeping a close eye on Sacramento’s cornerstone, Domantas Sabonis.
NBA Insider’s Prediction Regarding Domantas Sabonis
According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, the Charlotte Hornets could be a “sleeper” team to chase a trade for Sabonis.
“The Hornets are a sleeper team to monitor for a Domantas Sabonis trade. Charlotte has an elite offense when LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel share the court, which would be maximized by Sabonis. Charlotte has the necessary assets to make a strong offer to the Kings,” wrote Sidery in a recent tweet.
Sabonis entered the NBA in 2016, when he was selected 11th overall by the Orlando Magic. But he didn’t start with that team. It was because his rights were traded on draft night to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he began his professional career.
Sabonis later developed into an All-Star caliber player with the Indiana Pacers. It was before he got traded to the Sacramento Kings in 2022 and that blockbuster deal sent Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson to Indiana and made Sabonis the focal point of the Sacramento squad.
This season, Sabonis has played 11 games so far and has averaged 17.2 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Those numbers are solid. But injuries have slowed him down. If we see that Sabonis is currently sidelined with a partially torn meniscus in his left knee and has already missed 13 of his last games.
According to the latest team reports, he is expected to miss another four to five weeks, which adds more uncertainty to the Kings’ season.
If Sabonis were to join the Charlotte Hornets, his impact would be immediate. His rebounding capability would help the team secure second-chance points while also limiting opponents’ extra possessions.
Just as important, Sabonis’ passing ability would fit perfectly alongside LaMelo Ball, which would give Charlotte one of the league’s most creative playmaking duos.
Sabonis would also benefit young players like Brandon Miller. With defenders forced to collapse inside to stop Sabonis in the post, Miller would see more open looks from beyond the arc. As Sabonis continues to recover from his injury, it remains to be seen what moves the Kings will make.
